As others have said, losing WTC means that your HB and council tax benefit are likely to increase, so you won't actually be much worse off. Your partner could also apply for a hardship grant from his university (I think it is called the Access to Learning fund these days). There is no guarantee that he would receive it, but he won't if he doesn't apply.

You would be wise to follow the advice given about SOAs as well, and it is worth visiting the Old Style board for ideas of where to cut costs further.

ETA: I'm assuming that your partner is listed as a student for council tax purposes (as he will be exempt from paying any). You should get a 25% discount before any council tax benefit is applied, so your CT might go even lower.

Exactly so you have already decided what you want to do. Give up your job and see what you can claim. People are trying to tell you that actually you could still work and would probably be better off doing so with hb, etc.

Also that those hours, it must be quite easy to find a bar job, cleaning job for one of you to go over. But you don't seem to want to hear it?

    Lol are you serious?
Do you honestly think jobs are out there just waiting until someone needs one.
Most pubs are closing or tightening their belts, not taking on staff. Everyone always suggests cleaning as a job as though you could pick or choose one if you lowered your standards.

Pick up your local paper and count how many jobs are in it, then add all the jobs your local jobcenter has Then divide between the number of people looking for work in the area the paper covers.

ill think youll find there arent as many jobs going as you would like to believe.

Rubbish. Point is OP has all these hours free yet insists she can't work anymore for one reason or another. She could advertise to do cleaning/ ironing service. There ARE options available for those who want them.
Faced up to my debt Jan 2012.

It's going to rise because of blue chip employment, civil service redundancies. Etc. there are plenty of little jobs out there. School helper, bar, cleaning, office skivvy. Loads and loads. You just have to look.

As someone said, a healthy young lad has been looking and looking for two years and got nothing? He needs to maybe look at his cv, mannerisms, or the jobs he is going for. But it's by the by. A different topic.

She would probably be better off working as she is and claiming hb, cbt, etc. But she isn't listening.

Quote a few of the jobs you know of that are available that would suit your average unskilled worker.
    Should be simple eh.
  • Think of some self employed things you could do from home for eight hours a week?

    Take in washing
    Take in ironing
    Offer to clean someone's house
Crochet small things to sell on eBay
    Deliver catalogues
    Usborne books
    Baking cakes
Can you teach something? Piano? Baking?
Taking elderly people somewhere in your car and charging? Might have insurance implications?
Running errands for an elderly person fetching their shopping?
Grow veg and sell it at your gate?
Grow plants and sell them at your gate?

There must be lots of things self employed to plug eight hours?

So will the newley redundant be taking bar jobs, cleaning or flipping burgers for McD's.

Show us some of the jobs you know of. Im sure the OP would be only too happy for you to get her the extra 8 hours.

    Go on, I dare you

Why not just say she does Avon for 8 hours a week but earns nothing.

Do you think running errands for old people will pay the minimum wage. lol
