Yes, it's been announced by Virgin that you can cancel. Very good of them, to be honest.

I don't think Virgin/NTL accept it technically breaks the contract, but as it's a significant change they have agreed to allow people who are unhappy to cancel.

Gives them good publicity that they are on customer's side & makes Sky look bad.

VM didn't have a choice. It's a substantial change to the contract as entered into.

Jillie if I recall it's Sky One, Sky Sports News (unless you pay for the Sky Sports package), Sky News, Sky Two and Sky Three.

you don't get Sky Sports News even if you have the sports package.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if somebody did complain to trading standards about the loss of Sky One which is/was pretty much the main channel on Cable. I suspect that VM would end up being forced to allow customers to leave without breaching their contract.

I think I will write a letter to someone in authority in VM about this.

Anyone got an address for complaints etc?

From yesterday, you can cancel your contract without penalty as long as they receive it before 31 March. (announced on Working Lunch yesterday)

There's nothing worth watching on Sky anyway. Their equipment is unreliable, I'm on my second Sky box and it's already crashing regularly. Most of the time it won't pick up the BBC channels, but if I ring Sky they'll charge me a fortune for an engineer to come out and tell me what I already know - that the cheap and nasty box they gave me needs replacing.

As soon as VM reach my area I'm switching.

i phoned virgin in an attempt to get a better deal on my 3 for £29 (starter TV, 2mb bb, phone with free wk end calls). I said I didn't use the TV and phone that much and since the sky channels are going it is poor value for money so I may as well cancel the whole package. He said OK to my astonishment! No what can we do to keep you, or offering me any incentives at all. Mid cancellation I asked how much it would be to just keep the broadband and he said £18, I almost fell over, I can get the same from Virgin for £15 on their website +quidco! I was hoping I could keep the broadband and use VoIP (get rid of Telewest phone) and either get Sky dish without subscription or use freeview (and get shot of the tempermental Telewest box).

So they now have 30 days notice from me. What is the chance of them calling me up and offering me some deals on the broadband??? Have they ever called anyone here back to offer them cheaper service, otherwise I may have to eat my words and call them to keep the broadband!

I think you may be in for a long wait - I haven't heard of any cables being laid for some time now.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
