No it's not. There's plenty of motor vehicles on the road that pay no vehicle tax.No trees were killed to send this message, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced. - Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson)0 -

Van is 1 place back from me at the lights(me to the left in the bike lane)
its a dodgy junction as many drivers cut the corner into the lane.
I pull away on green and stay left (the next junction has left/stright from the left lane)
mr van driver catches up and cuts in on me at the last second to et in ront of me and stop at the red light
stopping in the ASZ

Mercedes driver decides passing me between the two traffic islands is a safe move
then has to cut in early due to a car coming down from the junction on the right0 -

You could have made life much easier for the motorist (and safer for yourself) by keeping well into the left in the layby)0 -
Perhaps Mr Flashman and his ilk will be perfect cyclists when petrol reaches £3+/litre in a couple of years.Or better still they can sit in their rusting cars making Brm Brm noises and thinking about how they are going to sort out all the cyclists who will be taking over the roads0

couple from todays commute
I know it's bad to stereotype but the second case is semi-predictable by the words "Mercedes driver".
In the same way that good cyclists can predict when a driver is likely to do something stupid; good drivers can predict when a cyclist might do something stupid.
Here's one from my commute and the decent cyclists here can suggest what they would do...

The approach to this mini-roundabout is southbound and uphill. Most traffic goes either straight ahead (where the cherry-picker is going) or turns 90 degrees right (where the white van is coming from).
If a cyclist wishes to go down the road at the 1.30 pm (where the postbox is) what would they signal and where should they be on the road?
{Pause for your answer}
Given that it is uphill I would expect them to look back, signal right and take a central position early on if they are going to either exit 2 or 3. I can then hold back behind them because I'm going straight on. If they are going straight on too, then they keep left and don't signal and I'll pass them before the island if there's room or after the roundabout.
Last night, I held back and watched a cyclist enter the roundabout and blindly pedal around the outside with no look back or signal and hop onto the pavement by the postbox. Had I been like the Mercedes driver that custardy saw, he'd have been on the bonnet and then in the gutter...
I have also seen road rage between cyclists here - old chap plodding gamely uphill so I hang back and don't overtake in the narrow bit - lycra chap comes pounding up the inside, swings around him and in front of me (no look over shoulder) and shakes fist at the old chap as he overtakes...I need to think of something new here...0
