I rang Potterton and got put through to the 'special team'.

Just for your information I actually work for that "special team" so can answer any questions you may have on the boilers

Perhaps you could answer my question above concerning "Potterton are saying that it is only a fault with boilers made in 2003 and after". From reading this and many other forums I believe this to be a lie.

I also have a Potterton Suprima 40 boiler - it was installed in my house when new in 2000. Potterton told me that it was too old for their free service, although THEY confirmed it was the same fault on the same model boiler!! I found out 14 houses in my have had the same fault already.

They told me it was £260 to fix but I would get a free 12 months insurance policy with it. Last week, the insurer has billed me £260 for the policy and done a free repair under the policy, confussing or what?? So in the end I paid £260

Potterton refuse to accept liability even though they confirmed the fault on the boiler in question. How can they get away with this??
  • Hi I'm new. My Potterton boiler has done the same thing, more so since British Gas serviced it a few months ago. Its now come to a head as it won't reset at all now, and the immersion heater broke at the same time.

I would love to try and get Potterton to fix it for free, but it seems thats not all straightforward. What do people think about taking out their own extended warranty. Normally that sort of thing wouldnt cover existing faults, but then if they deny there is a fault, that might place them in some difficulties. Cost for the warranty seems to be about £160 per year, so cheaper than paying to replace it myself. What do you guys think?

Thanks for this useful information. Following the Watchdog show a few weeks ago I called Potterton to report a fault with my heating system. They sent an engineer out to have a look at this. The engineer said there was no problem with my boiler and the fault lies with the hot water tank system therefore he couldn't do anything about it. Not Potterton's problem. Luckily, I was able to get my money back for the call out fee!

The hot water tank was manufactured by Gledhill Water Storage Ltd

    Model. FE 120LH
    Working head 6m
    Capacity 120L
    Spec code. 55E
    Serial # 25457

It makes vibrating sounds all the time and does not turn off at all. I am having to switch the boiler off from time to time as the house gets too hot and the water is constantly heated.

Any advice?? I am planning on calling Gledhill Water to see if they can send an engineer to look into this but before I do - any advice would be very welcome.

    Cheers.

    Boz

Your problem might be similar to one I had on a rented property. I don't have all of the details to hand but my Potterton boiler was locking out like other posters and I thought it was the boiler PCB but there were actually two circuit boards on Gledhill water tank and it was one of those that was broken. How old is your house and who was the builder? I'll tell you why later if its relevant ;)

This is what Trading Standards told me
Thankyou for your e mail dated 27 August 2007. I have looked over the facts of your complaint and can confirm the following.
From the information in hand, it appears that Potterton have not been contacted in relation to these problems within the 6 year time limit. A consumer can only bring a case against a retailer, alleging non conformity of contract for up to six years after the sale.
I appreciate your concerns in relation to the findings of Watchdog but unfortunately any redress offered by the trader will be as a gesture of goodwill and will not be enforceable under any specific legislation. However, it is still advisable to put your complaint in writing to Potterton (as you have already done) in order to stress your concerns about this product and to hopefully reach a suitable arrangement with the trader

So, Potterton know about the problem and rather than being proactive and contacting owners, like car manufacturers do for example, they do nothing and hope people don't complain until it's too late.

This was how I solved mine in the end, only there was some confusion as I was initially told their policy was free as Id booked a repair at £159. Then the next person told me I could claim a free repair under the policy (which I thought was free).

Was irritates me is that my boiler was identified by Potterton as the same model as the "watchdog affected" ones and as having the same fault. But they won't cover it because they only say it applies to boliers manufactured after 2003!! What a contradiction!! Incidently I know of at least 14 houses in my road who had the boilers installed that have had the PCB replaced.

Is there any legalities with taping the call to a customer services department?? as when someone is recorded they watch more what they say and are less likely to hang up when the conversation gets more heated.

Also, a localheating engineer would do it cheaper than Potterton themselves, he has the part ready for us but he suggested going via the free route first. He will charge around £250 for the job.
  • No problem recording your telephone calls - you do not need to make anyone aware of this beforehand either.

So long as you know of no reason why this recording cannot be intercepted by a third party...

    Hi tst,

I have one of these boilers - it was installed Sept 2002. It had this problem straight away and Potterton came in within weeks and replaced the circuit board. I always thought it was odd cos it was the first thing he did ! That said, my boiler still isn't perfect and can still switch itself off - though it's very occasional now. It needs to be treated very tenderly and I can only ask it to get one degree warmer at a time or it gets very upset! Maybe I should have contacted them again to get a more recent circuit board:confused:. You've got me wondering now.:o
