Potterton Suprima Boiler owners

Watchdog BBC did a story on these boilers. Having to restart the boiler to get any hot water or heating. But until the faulty part was replaced it would just keep switching off. It cost about £300 to repair the faulty circuit board.

If you've paid for a repair to your boiler due to circuit board failure and would like to ask for your money back, you can use this sample letter (link below) to contact Potterton.

If your boiler has broken down due to circuit board failure and would like Potterton to pay, you can use this sample letter(link below)[

Thanks for this useful information. Following the Watchdog show a few weeks ago I called Potterton to report a fault with my heating system. They sent an engineer out to have a look at this. The engineer said there was no problem with my boiler and the fault lies with the hot water tank system therefore he couldn't do anything about it. Not Potterton's problem. Luckily, I was able to get my money back for the call out fee!

The hot water tank was manufactured by Gledhill Water Storage Ltd

    Model. FE 120LH
    Working head 6m
    Capacity 120L
    Spec code. 55E
    Serial # 25457

It makes vibrating sounds all the time and does not turn off at all. I am having to switch the boiler off from time to time as the house gets too hot and the water is constantly heated.

Any advice?? I am planning on calling Gledhill Water to see if they can send an engineer to look into this but before I do - any advice would be very welcome.

    Cheers.

  • Faulty cylinder thermostat by the sound of it, it should be mounted a third of the way up from the bottom of the tank and wired into a junction box near the tank. Check it works by turning the temperature setting up and down and listening for it clicking. If it does not click then it is probably faulty. They are not expensive and easy to change normally only having two wires.

Masked Marauder - many thanks. I checked this as suggested by turning the temperature setting up and down. It does click and I could feel the pump going. The problem is that it does not turn off when the set temperature is reached or the timer turns it off.

  • I viewed the BBC’s Watchdog website regarding the Potterton boiler lockout problems, but it only seems to concern retrospective claims and downloadable letter templates.

I have today (23/03/07) contacted Potterton to ask how to proceed with the resolution of the lockout problem. They have informed me that if a call is registered before the end of March 2007 they will send an engineer during April to replace parts (if the problem is the lockout) completely free of charge! Their telephone number is 08706 060780. There is a dedicated team working on this problem and you will need to quote your boiler reference number.

it is a hot water tank.

The plumber has quoted me £188 plus VAT to replace the circuit board. is this reasonable. it seems a lot of money to me!

I have a Potterton boiler but it is not the boiler that is the problem. Potterton sent an engineer out and he said there was no problem with my boiler and the fault lies with the hot water tank system therefore he couldn't do anything about it.

Grateful for advice before I instruct the plumber to go ahead and carry out the job.

    Thanks.

Following this link and reading Watchdog articles we downloaded the letter asking for refund of costs for replacement of faulty PCB. Potterton refused and made an offer to call and service Boiler. The boiler had been serviced at time of PCB replacement and now works fine. We turned down their offer and repeated our request for a refund. They declined to pay anything and also withdrew any further offers of service. Our plumber (Corgi registered) had telephoned Potterton prior to replacing the PCB and carried out a gas valve replacement to see if it was that - at their suggestion. 2 days later boiler was still locking out - not the gas valve! PCB then replaced and problem solved.I think this stinks - there is overwhelming evidence against Potterton and the faulty PCB's. I am thinking of taking it to small claims Court and wonder if anyone else has any experience with Potterton and the faulty PCB's.

  • I have had the same problems and had to have the PCB replaced two years ago. Unfortunately I didn't bug Potterton at the time because of other domestic pressures. My polite initial letter was rejected with the classic comment that 'the problem isn't straightforward', an offer of a 'free' admission to their guarantee scheme. They did say that they would reconsider if I could produce receipts for annual services.I plan to write back pointing out that the PCB problem is that simple and threatening small claims court. My slight problem is that the boiler was in a new house and I am stuck between the housebuilder and Potterton who both claim the other is responsible.Does anyone have a copy of their original product manual? Can they confirm whether annual services are specified?
