  • I have read the forum and today have a Suprima 50 L with what appears to be the classic 'lock out' problem. Boiler was installed new in 2003.

So I called Potterton and was put through to the special team handling these issues. They took a few details and advised that they are still offering to send an engineer, free of charge, to assess the situation and if it is the 'lock out' problem manufacturing defect then they will replace the necessary parts also for free. If the problem is not relating to a manufacturing defect they will leave a full report on the problems found and then I can decide how to proceed.

So it's still worth giving Potterton a call before you part with any cash!

Just got to wait a week to see the engineer, but my resets seem to last a few hours still and it's summer so that's not a real issue.

    Hope this helps...
  • I rang Potterton and got put through to the 'special team'. They refused to send an engineer out except on a chargeable basis as my boiler was too old. The house is about seven years old and the boiler is almost certainly the original.

I said I was disappointed that a reputable company felt that it wasn't responsible for an acknowledged manufacturing defect which was obviously present when the boiler was new and treated different customers differently.

Has anyone else been turned down on this basis amd subsequently got them to change their minds?

How did you get on katana97?
  • hi,
thanks for all the info everyone. I called the number, the team is definitely still running (sept'07), but becuase my boiler is 5 years old (I have been putting up with this problem for too long) they said they can't do a free repair.

they offered a repair for £260 ish.

So instead I will buy a pcb online and replace myself. I did once re-soulder the original pcb, that worked for a few weeks. time for a brand new one.

  • I called out a plumber for what I thought was a problem with my hot water tank, they came out and replaced the pump and charged me £300 plus an additional £150 went to my insrance company for an emergency repair although the repair was done 2 weeks after the call!! Although the radiators were working upstairs I was told the ones downstairs would take time to heat up.....but of course next day, everything switches off again, no hot water and no heating- call them out again and now they're saying its the PCB. Could they have diagnosed incorrectly in the first place?

Tried calling Potterton to pay for the replacement and they have refused....any advise/help? (the original plumber wants £200 to replace the board)

    Hi,

Would anyone know whether there is a time limit to claim from Potterton?

I have only just noticed this thread, however we had this exact problem about 2 years ago, and had to have the PCB replaced - not had any problems with it since.

    Could we still claim?
  • I also contacted potterton with the Watchdog template letter but they informed me they would only do repairs on boilers that were 5 years old or younger. Unfortunately mine is 7 years old, however i have only lived in my house for 10 months so i fail to see how it is my fault that the previous owner failed to report the problem, and now I have to live with it.

Surely there is a way in which Potterton can be held responsible for all of their faulty boilers as this is obviously a common problem, with what i can see as hundreds of forum posts across various websites!

Would anyone be interested in starting a pettition some how, maybe via email then sending it off to Potteton and Watchdog?

We have a potterton Boiler, installed when house was built 11 - 13 years ago, had problems from the date we moved in 8 years ago have had at least 10 repairs done on the boiler by BG cover, but its been fine for the last 2 years now, but they replaced quite a few parts last time
  • I have the problem described, however Potterton are saying that it is only a fault with boilers made in 2003 and after.
They will not fix mine for free as it was made in 2001.

The only refence I can find to 2003 is one the BBC website as the date that Potterton admitted to the fault to British Gas.

I am under the impression that it happens in boilers before 2003, does any one have any more information or have a boiler that was fixed by Potterton before that date.
