As far as own-brand petrol snobbery goes, I'm pretty sure it'd be a different matter if M&S started selling petrol. "It's not just petrol, it's hand-pumped, double-refined, extra-virgin petrol from Marks and Spencer.....".

    How true :rotfl:

    odear.
    I think I may have a serious problem :-(
Que long winded story (sorry, need a rant :))

Yesterday, I bought a car from someone in Southampton.
Whilst driving home, we thought we'd better put some petrol in. So I wacked a tenner in from a station called "Total" (never seen one before, but we were on nearly empty) we drove home through DEEP puddles, and the car started to splutter a little. We stopped at a Texaco and put more fuel in, worried that maybe the problem was the fuel gauge was faulty and we were out of petrol.
So we drove the rest of the way home with the occasional cough cough splutter splutter, and this time we put it down to having to drive through some real deep puddles.
We got to less than a mile home and the car just gave up. It is now parked in a layby about 1/2 a mile from my house. Being so close to home, my breakdown recovery doesn't cover me.

The problem is, what do I do if the petrol was bought by someone else?
embarrassed to say I used to work for barclays..sorry

yes, it ran with no problems, that was saturday, but we didn't drive it for as long as we did to take it home. (90mile drive home)
do you think i should ring the bloe we bought it from? (He's a small trader, and we kept his reciept)
he lives in southampton, I couldnt work out if thats within the affected area and also is it only Morrissons and Tescos with the problem? Or could it be the "Total" garage I put some in?

Why not contact the total garage and ask them if they have been affected?
  • Folks :-
I filled in the questionaire at https://www.faultyfuel.com expecting to contribute to a survey of where the dodgy petrol was coming from / which cars were effected (this was when the story had just broke and there was alot of uncertainty.) In the event they appear to be trying to drum up business to take the petrol suppliers to court.

Is it worth going with these folks? Is it better doing it myself? (Are they going to take a fee out of the money the supermarkets pay up?)

So far I've paid out something over £200 and the problem still isn't fixed...

    Thanks

    Kevin

Sounds like they just want the money, afaik they're paying up anyway. Contact station that sold the faulty petrol.

Also although my car did not develop a fault as such, after filling up at shell it's running much smoother than before. Also mpg on tesco petrol seemed really poor.

I've had this problem. I filled up at a Tesco just outside Cambridge 10 days ago and on Saturday it broke down. It limped to the garage on Monday and is now sat waiting for a new O2 sensor to arrive from Vauxhall. When I took it in the mechanic asked me if I'd filled up at Tesco, so this has obviously been known about for a few days.

If it is the petrol to blame are there any grounds for claiming the repair costs from Tesco?

I work at a Vauxhall Retailer and have seen a few cases - Tesco have promised to reimburse my customers due to the O2 sensor failing. You should have no troubles there.

Also, it is looking like this part is becoming an issue as the stocks are falling! If anyone suspects a problem, don't delay. Visit the retailers for a diagnostic check should your mamagement light come on.

    All the best of luck!!!!!!!:p

Tesco have just paid me £547 for my car being off the road 5 days and the repair costing £334 and about £63 in taxi fairs.
It looks like they have paid £30 a day compensation which I am very happy with and would like to thank Tesco for a fast responce.
