The "Pay ALL your debt off by Xmas 2012" challenge - PART 3!!!

  • Here's my dilemma....

All my debt busting plans to pay debts off by end of 2012 went pear shaped when my DH had to change his job. Although I'm very grateful he's got a job, we are now £400 a month worse off  (salary less, travel and car maintenance/insurance costs up). This basically means that we can only afford to pay off £100 a month, until a personal loan of ours finishes in December (not included in my signature total as I knew it would finish by Xmas anyway). Then we can pay off £290 a month. We have 2 cards on 0% and they are due to finish the interest free period Oct and Dec (in our original plan we would have paid them off by the time they finish). In addition we have an overdraft of about £1100 which seems to increase on a monthly basis.

My question is - should I put these debts onto our offset mortgage and pay them off at a rate of £290 a month from Jan, when our loan finishes? Or should I try and take out another 0% card? I suppose I need to look at the costs of paying to transfer to another card vs our mortgage rate (fixed rate of 6.89%) but I'm not sure how to work that out. Also we've taken 2 credit cards out last year as it is to get 0% deals and I'm not sure how taking out another one will affect our credit rating.

Not sure what to do - what would you guys do in my circumstances as where money is concerned, I'm not sensible - to say the least?!

Very grateful for any help :D.

Aw I'm really sorry that people were worried about me :( now I feel bad. Sorry everyone!

Mrs A, have you worked out what the interest would be if you paid it off as part of the mortgage vs if you did the switch-a-roo thing? Would you end up paying even more money back if you did it the mortgage way?

If you haven't increased your credit for 6 months and you've been a good payer, then I think that works in favour regarding credit rating. But I'm unsure to be honest. I'm only allowed to increase my OD and I'm not allowed anymore credit cards, which is confusing as one you pay off each month the other you don't!

Update from me: I've got the fleabay bug and am busy editing photos ready to list tonight :D although have to make a small spend today of a desk and chair, I've found quite a cheapy one in that swedish shop that will suit my needs for both sewing and work, and a half decent chair too.

Ooh and I told the OH yesterday "no we don't need to go out for cheese, I'll just use mozzarella instead!" so we didn't do a mini-shop and buy things we didn't need wahey!

    Morning All

    Welcome back Kerri

Mrs A - I personally would take another 0% CC as ive done the 'chuck it on the mortgage' thing and am now paying £800 a month and still had nearly £9k in debt build up afterwards :( I've realised its just one of those push it to one side and forget about it, quick fixes :(

Ok I have a mini rant and I want your opinion as to whether im over reacting to it or if I can be justifiably miffed :o

We have been doing our garden the last week and across the road came over and kind of started to 'muck in', his wife came over about an hour later with their child (same as as my DD) and kind of hung around for a while. Got to lunchtime and I gave DD hers as she has nursery after, took her to nursery, came back and they are still here, so make DH, DS and I our lunch and try best to not be rude while making it clear im not feeding them as they weren't actually invited over.
Anyway their Child starts tapping me 'im hungry', so I say 'go tell mummy and she'll take you home for lunch' he points to the sweets that are on the side and I say 'no, they are for DD to take to nursery next week for her friends' and re-iterate he needs to go and get his mum to take him home. He finally trots off and I hear him tell his mum hes hungry and then he wanders back and starts perstering me for food again. Im getting a bit miffed by now (we all know what im like ;)) so I take him out and say 'he's telling me he wants his lunch, ive said he needs to tell you not me lol' and start doing a bit more gardening. mum says 'we'll take you home in a min for lunch', 20 minutes later . . I ask 'wheres *child*' mum goes in house, 'oh hes upstairs with DS. Im a bit surprised by this as I told DS to go out but think ok, another 20 odd minutes go past and I say 'he hasnt come back' and decide to go upstairs to remind DS hes supposed to be going out not playing computer. Walk in DS's room, hes not there but their child is sat behind his bed with DD's class sweets eating them
Now im furious as A) I paid for them and said very clearly he couldnt have them, B) they knew he was hungry and didnt take him home for any dinner so he helped himself to our food (by the time we found him it was past 2pm!) and C) they didnt apologise for what he'd done or offer to replace them (I woul have said dont bother tbh but its how I would have handled it if it was DD, though she wouldnt have done it in the first place!) their child is the same age as DD so its not even as if its a younger child who hasnt quite grasped right from wrong.

    Am I over reacting here?

The child knew it was doing wrong, otherwise it wouldn't have been upstairs on its own eating the sweets in secret! I'd be a little bit mad too... even if they said to you do you have something I can give him while we are helping you, or something along those lines. I might be overreacting too, but technically the child was stealing!!

  • Debt paying is taking a back burner again as I accidentally ordered a dys0n hoover! Mr S bought a hoover back in November but it was rubbish and didn't actually suck anything up so I got fed up with it. We also spent a bit more on holiday than planned as we paid for my sortofmum for a lot of stuff unintentionally and while we have got some of the money back, we can't really ask for it all. I'm waiting for £50 from quidc0 as I agreed to appear in a magazine for them!

  • Hi everyone
I am still (kind of) sticking to budget. Just got back from a lovely weekend in Brighton. In holiday terms it was cheap but not as cheap as staying at home :rotfl:
Was so lovely to spend time with wonderful people in such a great place - the friend I went with is thinking of moving to live there and this weekend has confirmed it for her. So future cheap holidays sorted :D
Jemma not been back to kayak - yet. Swam in the sea though and those waves are pretty big.
Friday next week is the long-awaited pay day when I hope to get to 67% paid off. Seems I have been 50 something % paid off for past 4 months SOOOOO excited to finally move it on to 60%+
I may still make it to DFX12 but it depends on those slippery snakes of garage/house maintenance bills.
Well done everyone for working away so hard at those pesky debts

See thats my thought as well, he stole from us at the end of the day :(

I think whats griping at me the most is, we didnt invite them over, we didnt ask for their help in any way, they chose to come of their own accord so I dont see why I should feed their child :( When I visit someone if they say 'id better start on some lunch/tea' I use that as my cue to take my family home and say 'oh i'd better get off and feed the brood, DH will be wondering what the hecks happened to us' and load up the kids and go. If they say 'i'd better start some lunch, what do you want?' (my close mates and I don't do the 'do you want to stay' your either going home or your staying, hosts choice lol) then thats fine, they have decided to feed you, but even if im invited over I dont expect my friends to feed me and my family :(

Jakes-Mum I'd be really miffed as well to be honest. You don't go round someones house and help yourself to their gin, so why should your child help themselves to your childs sweets, especially when they have been told No. If it were my child I'd be incredibly embarassed, but also, I wouldn't have let my child run off into the house uninvited anyway especially not for as long as they did, how rude!
