Ooooh! I can see that the money is on it's way into my account on Monday from the Sharesave, so I'll be getting that loan out of my hair.

Well, I'm not calling my loan Raymond, but if it did have a name it would have to be a really annoying bloke. Loan, I dub the Justin Lee Collins. This is possibly one of the high points of the year for me!

I've got three weeks off in October, so if I could clear that credit card and have some money left over, I might actually go and do something with my holiday instead of freelance work!

it's like I've actually got 2 people in my head in a way as one extreme of my personality is outgoing, self-confident and adventurous and wants to the travel the world, while the other is cowering in a hole and is frightened of the world.

Jemma – I’m sorry to read you’re going through tough times.....I’m a year or two older than you (ahem) and your words could have been mine a few years ago.....you’re absolutely right, take this at your pace....don’t let others dictate your agenda or tell you what’s good for you...one step at a time and I promise in the fullness of time you'll be all the richer for having travelled this particular journey xx

AFM: £2.4k to go.....I’m taking a bit of a risky strategy and throwing absolutely everything at it over the next few weeks to achieve my debt free status this month - exactly 5yrs from that very black and desperate day when I came to terms with the fact that I was in financial meltdown with all my escape routes blocked.

£1350 of the balance is taken care of as this is in my budget for monthly debt repayment, but to find the extra £1.1k I’ll have to defer planned spends into Sept, Oct & Nov. I’ve received a small bonus from work so this will help, in addition I’ll be stripping all outgoings to the absolute bare essentials with a shopping budget for the month of just £50, I’ll be using what’s in the freezer and when that runs out going back to the good old days of value beans on value toast. I’ve cancelled a much needed hair appointment (I’ll put my hair up for the next couple of months), along with all (social) diary dates and the car will only be used for essential journeys.....in simple terms I’ll be turning the clock back to Aug ’07 and a time when I quite literally didn’t have a penny to my name.....it will be a timely reminder of how the hard the bad times were and a symbolic end to what has been a life changing journey.

But I’ve not crossed the finishing line yet so it’s heads down for the final sprint and for now my totals stand at:

    #046 - £11,611/£14,128 (82%)

    Debt-free and Proud!
    Hi Guys!
Lemon, I totally understand when you say how hard it is to get out of the mindset of scrimping and saving, so that you can get rid of debts. I have been talking abt a trip all summer. Well I spent so long trying to find the best deal possible, that we nearly didn't have any break at all. It is v difficult to get a last minute break here, as everywhere gets booked up really early. There is no equivalent of teletext, Ceefax or lastminute.com here. One of my friends became impatient with my tale of phoning 20 places, just to get (and failing at it!) more bang for my buck. So I bit the bullet and booked a hotel for myself and the children for 5 nights at beautiful Harrison Hot Springs, which is about 2 hrs east from us. DH will enjoy the peace and quiet of the house while we are away. I never go to the same location twice, so there should be plenty to keep us interested!
May, thanx for the kind wishes! Super, love your avatar-what a cutie ! We have a lab x ROTTIE!!! He eats his own body weight in Iams everyday!
Ok, must go and see what the children have packed for their hols...even their lists have their own lists! Excitement isn't the word!
Talk to you when I get back!
PS Baby is now the size of an avocado, so why do I look as if I hv an orca whale under my shirt???

Just got a text from my ex saying that there is a cheque for me at his - £147 rebate from Welcome Finance! Nice! That will pay for the filling I need (boo!) and let me make an extra payment to my credit card and catalogue!

Out of interest, if you had say £100 extra would you put it all on the one thing or split it up amongst a few things?

Depends what the interest rates were, if I had different amounts on different rates I would pay the whole lot off the highest interest paying card, if everything was on 0% I would pay it all off the highest or 2 highest balance cards

Think I'm going to pay off some Buy Now Pay Later items on my catalogue. Save on interest in the long run and its extra reward points for Christmas presents.

  • Helpful advice please! My car keeps needing repairs. At 10 years old is it just a money pit to get rid of? No money for another one is the main reason I keep on with it. In the last month it has cost me £500. It is de-railing my debt repayments. Just broke down again today - RAC think it is faulty ignition coil which is the last repair I had done last Tuesday. I have left it at garage to look at.

If I hadn't spent money on repairs I would be half way to buying another cheap car. Now seems to be worst scenario in that I have paid for repairs but the list keeps on going.

How do I get another car that doesn't blow my debt repayments out?

Just writing this to get my frustration out I think, but any one who can make me see sensible step forward will have my gratitude :)
