Spoke to OH last night. Apparently it's "my debt" (even though a third of it is since we married and paid for furniture, wedding, food, petrol, bills etc when he had no work)

Ok it is all in my name and I'm not trying to get anyone else to pay for it.

Those who have done their own DMP, did you use the letters etc in the payplan pack? Thinking of trying to sort it all out myself first. :o

NewlyWed: Hi, we went the DIY route, using NDL letters, but we then tweaked them a bit to fit in with our circumstances. If you like I can send you a copy of one of them as an idea :)

Morning to everyone else, hope you all have a good day :)

Yes please! Is is something like this:

Dear sirs, I am rubbish at managing my money and if I pay your huge interest rate that you have recently so helpfully increased, then I will not be able to pay for rent and basic food to live on.?? :D

Got a letter last night saying after a "review" they are increasing one of my cards to 25% APR. Cheers! Need that like a kick in the head!!! Going to have a ceremonial cutting up of that card as my starter!!

That seems a bit harsh. Is it a credit card or store card? Do you know why they reviewed your card, am I right in thinking that you hadn't actually defaulted yet on any of your accounts?

  • Just a quick hi to all, quiet here - again - long may it last!!(probably won't lol)
Just curious newlywed why do you want to diy? Although I suppose means you still in complete control - I just couldn't face the phonecalls so CCCS were definately good option for me!! Like your letter though think I might keep that in mind for the future ..ha,ha.

Not missed any payments. Have had one late payment and have one over limit charge though on that card. Guess that's why.

That's the one I can't pay all of the minimum on this month - ho hum.

Newlywed, I think there are pros and cons of doing your own DMP (I myself went with Payplan). On plus side, you have more control and know exactly what's going on. You will also be able to sort things out and respond to queries quicker. On the downside, you will not have the experience that CCCS or Payplan have in getting them to freeze interest - which may only mean it takes you that little bit longer. Also, I have heard that some creditors will only acknowledge DMP if done through a credible third party. The other obvious disadvantages are not being able to say "talk to CCCS/Payplan" when they start hassling, though you always have the option to change your number, and making only one payment and letting the DMC do the hard work. You should make the right decision for you.

Apart from telling you it was all your own debt, how did your husband take the news? Sorry to be nosy - I was just wondering as I am plucking up courage to tell mine (later!)

He already knew about the debt. Just that he thought now he had a job and was paying the rent etc that my debt would be going down.

Well, it is going down but i pay over £1000 a month and it only goes down by £300.

As for doing my own DMP - I think it's more a case of wanting to be in control. I've messed up by myself so I kinda think I ought to be sorting it out by myself. :o On the other hand, the thought of just making one monthly payment to the debt is very appealing.
