  • They are asking for a photo of the tin which I no lOnger have, any ideas?
  • Can anyone confirm if this yellowing affects DULUX SATINWOOD PAINT too? Ot is it best to ring dulux and check?

I bought one tin of this late last year to use for a future renovation project which i am now about to start.

The tin is unopened and unused, however I do not want to open and use it for hours of work if in the end the paintwork will go yellow! :(
if i had known then what i know now
  • Eventually got £250 compensation (cheque- didn't take them up on any of their offers for their sh*tty products :) )
Going to email again just to really put across how dissapointed I am at how they have treated customers over the matter.. its totally unacceptable.
Am just hoping this thread has caused their company a few thousand pounds worth of damages and that will be my thanks to them for their 'fantastic' customer service.
Won't ever use any of their paints again!!!!

I'm absolutely gutted - it's unforgivable to produce paint that yellows like this, especially a company as big as Dulux/ICI. If EU rules have made it impracticle to make paint that stays white, they should not make that paint anymore, or at least warn you clearly on the front of the tin "This paint will be yellow within weeks".

I just bought my house about 6 months ago, and had all the carpets pulled up so I could decorate top to bottom before moving furniture in. I used Dulux for everything as a few people had said they make good paints. It was a paintstaking job to paint everything properly, and I put a lot of hours in to do a flawless job and it looked amazing when it was all done. The very light yellow walls were eccentuated by the gleaming white skirting boards and door frames and I was really proud of it. For the wood surfaces, I used their "Proffessional Liquid Gloss Pure Brilliant White" paint. Over the last few weeks I have begun to notice though, that while my ceilings are still an immaculate white, all my wooden surfaces are now becoming a cream/nicotine yellow and nobody smokes in my house. I painted my doors over a period of a couple of months and I can actually give or take work out the order I painted them from the varying degrees of off-white to yellow. The last door was finished a month ago, and there's already a marked contrast between that and the white units next to it.

I will of course be writing to Dulux to complain and demand compensation, but it's hassle I don't need. An offer of some free paint is an insult when you think of all the man hours required to move all the furniture, sand it all down and repaint again. I can't see a decorator being able to do all that in less than a week - the doors alone could take that long!

Wish I'd known their paint does this before I bought it - you buy "pure brilliant white" and expect to get pure brilliant white.
  • Last summer I refurbished my whole house (included stripping all woodwork and then priming, undercoating and glossing).

The Dulux Brilliant White gloss has yellowed - very badly in some places - gutted!

I got in touch with Dulux - they first offered me £100 and vouchers for complementary paint. I refused this offer so they offered a further £400 (so a total of £500). £500 is no where near the cost involved in getting the furniture moved, carpets lifted, woodwork sanded and then re-gloss, furniture moved back, carpets re-fitted. Despite me explaining this to Dulux they said they were only offering it as a gesture of goodwill and that my contract was with Homebase as that's where I bought the paint from.

I then contacted Homebase head office regarding the situation and they've stated they aren't willing to offer any compensation as Dulux have offered £500 and complementary paint.

Dulux and Homebase seem to think that because I did the painting myself instead of using a decorator, they aren't willing/liable to pay for a decorator to re-do the work (I've had people comment that the paint work is as good as / better than many decorators). This is despite quoting what's stipulated in the Sales of Goods Act. Once I receive a letter from Homebase stating that they're not willing to compensate to the extent of remedying the situation I'll be filing a case with the Small Claims Court.

Has anyone taken Dulux or the retailer that they brought their paint from to the Small Claims Court?
  • Hi all,

I have just had the first offer of compensation, £125 cheque and the offer of 5litres Trade Gloss and Undercoat (not sure if that's 5litres of each?)

Do i accept this, what is the going rate on compensation? I don't have receipts but i did have the left over can. I used a painter but again i don't have receipts.

    Thoughts?

    Don't accept the offer yet.

Write back (I did it via e-mail which was far quicker), stating that the cost to re-do the yellowing paint will be far in excess of £50, which was what I was offered.

I stated that the cost to get someone to repaint the doors and skirting that had yellowed in my house would be about £300, and I received a reply offering this amount as well as the 2 X 5L paint vouchers.
Yes, it's 5 litres of Trade gloss and 5 litres of undercoat, although when I collected it from B&Q they didn't have the undercoat so I was given primer/undercoat).
The voucher doesn't specify that you must get a 5L tin of each, so I picked up 2 tins of 2.5L each.
