However, beggars can't be choosers. 16Gb costs £499.

Very good Android phones are available for about £100 and apparently a Windows Phone Nokia under £100 is coming: Best cheap android phone ?
You are likely to need a cheap adapter for a micro sim if you don't ask Orange to send you a normal replacement sim card instead.
Android phones are fine for the price as long as you know:

1. Not all apps work with all devices.
2. You cant upgrade your OS to newer version until / if released by the manufacture. In many cases this can take 3-6 months. Many device are still stuck at version Android ver 2.0 when version 5.0 is about to release. Its up to the phone manufacture to release the update or not.
3. Android phones have many screen size so again some apps are design to work only with the certain screen size.
4. Android is know for malware problem. Search Android malware in Google.
5. Most apps are not design for your phone, rather for many Android devices (samsung, htc etc) so apps mainly games run slower than iphone
6. Many cheap Android phones have old OS Ver 2 and can be very slow.

The points may not sound that important for Android users but someone using iphone are due to way upgarde etc work.

I have read some comments on posts from Android users such as "Why would I need to upgarde the phone", "I dont need iphone", "I dont use apps", "Android is Open Source", "I dont like Apple wall" etc.

It is always important to update the OS when available if you are using the phone for banking, facebook etc. The updage do not only add functions but it also close down any security hols. Maybe thats why Malware is less on iphone than Android.

If Malware is same on all os as % of apps, why download noumber higher for Android? 8 votes

It's incorrect. Android do have higher malware

I can only repeat: beggars cannot be choosers.
    1. Feel free to pay extra £500 for being able to use all hundreds of thousands of apps. I am happy with a few dozens.
    2. Feel free to pay extra £500 for being able to upgrade to the newest version of OS the next day it is released. I can easily upgrade my 2.2 to 2.3, but I don't want to.
    3. Many £100ish androids have high and most common resolution 480x800. Feel free to pay ...
    4. Feel free to pay extra £500 for being a fool and getting the most fool-proof toy.
    5. Most PC soft is not designed for your particular PC and works perfectly on all PCs with required specs. Feel free to pay extra £500 for...
    6. £100ish Vivacity/OSF2/Acer run 2.3. Feel free to pay extra £500 for getting a toy with a slightly higher speed.
And don't forget to pay extra £60 on the top of £500 to get a proper 2-year warranty for your precious toy, then don't forget to pay a double price for the insurance.

Sorry to disappoint, you will need to do your maths again.
The cheapest iPhone is £319 not £500.
In your comparison extra is not £500, it's £319 (cost of iPhone) less cost of android phone. Also cheapest android is not going to be as good and very very slow.

This is basic, We need more maths less in schools.

You definitely needed it more. And more attention to details.
The OP wanted 4s 32G and quoted £600+.
    £600-£100=£500.
The cheapest android costs much less than £100.
And feel free to believe that outdated 3gs is better than Acer LM and to pay extra £200 for more poor screen and camera, slower processor and many other shortcomings that you are well aware off but prefer to ignore because of the point 4 above and some other reasons that I can only guess about.
Basic really. However, some narrow-minded people are incapable of understanding even basic things and can only stubbornly advise paying £320 for an outdated phone to a person that "can't begin to afford" paying £600 and has 2 years ahead to pay for an expensive contract.

No, I don't insist in this. Feel free to replace £500+£60 in my comparison with £200+£60. Will this make a big difference to the OP?
Don't forget to edit point 6:

    6. Feel free to pay extra £200 for getting a toy with a slower speed.

And don't forget to add 7, 8, 9, ... for many shortcomings that you prefer not to mention. As you seem to have problems with this I can help you:

Such comparison makes no sense whatsoever in this particular case and in general. The cheapest iPhone is likely always to be better simply because Apple decided not to make cheap iPhones. So what?

I would have through most people will compare iPhone 4S againstAndroid Samsung Galaxy Nexus not with sub £100 Android phones. If you want to compare this way to show howexpensive iPhones are is fine but I think most people will prefer to comparelike for like. Samsung Galaxy Nexus(£450-£500) Vs iPhone 4S (£500).

How can Samsung charger £50.00 extra for white Galaxy Nexus, both phones are the same apart from the colour.

You seem to have lost the plot absolutely.
I don't care about 'most people'. I was replying to Quave who "can't begin to afford" paying £600. My point was that they were getting very little for extra £500ish. And I didn't compare to the cheapest androids as you were trying to imply.
Your post was supposedly addressed to Quave too. If so, god knows what the point of your post was.
The second post was a little more clear. Supposedly you suggested to buy 3gs, but failed to say that in this case Quave gets much less despite paying extra £200+£60.

I think it is the last thing that Quave worries about. So do I. My HTC is white only because it was cheaper than other colours.

If you want to get it right go for iPhone 4 or 4s
The Xperia S still come with the android os ver 2 which is over a year old.
The updates can take 3 to 6 months.
You will also find out that with the android phones not all apps work with all phones due to many os versions, many screen size etc.
The iPhone will give you easy to use solution.

Play with all phones you like in the shop and see which one you like

    iPhone peddling again....?
Do you really think it's a good idea for them to go out and purchase one of the most expensive phones on the market, when tht OP has specifically mentioned that they're really not that into tech?
You're very quickly becoming the "Billy Graham" of Apple. :p

Android 2.3.7 was made available in September 2011, around six months ago.

Which version is the Xperia S shipping with?
The updates can take 3 to 6 months.

One of the significant advantages Android offers manufacturers is the ability to differentiate their handsets in the marketplace through the user interface. Expecting immediate software updates when you have committed to one vendor is somewhat unreasonable.
You will also find out that with the android phones not all apps work with all phones due to many os versions, many screen size etc.

Google Play will not display apps that are incompatible with your device.

Ignored the usual goodman Apple sanctimony.
