I just got 6.95peggymixels download and 0.81 upload and I am a bit over a mile from the exchange. The horse and cart with electricity hasn't been here long, so no chance of cable. This is on the "up to 24 meg" Utility Warehouse system. I was only getting a download of 0.4 meg(ish) when on the "up to 8 Meg."

This is a perfect example of my issue with UW. It relies on a loose network of individuals with seemingly little oversight.
    Not the prices then. :D

You have misunderstood this system (wonder who could have mislead you?)
Did we all misunderstand you when you said that you have a Utility Warehouse pre payment card beating cashback card, or, were you just misleading us?

For everyone who uses land line broadband on an up to 24mbps or up to 8mbps basis. Having the modem plugged directly into master socket without an extension cable will increase the stability and increase signal to noise ratio of the broadband connection.

It will also allow a higher speed connection. However, the connection will often need to be re-profiled by speaking to technical support in order to get the highest stable speed. The UW support system means that for someone using UW LLU, this can be done on the spot and takes just a few minutes.

I suggest if it is possible to connect the modem directly to master type socket (with the removable panel on bottom half) then do so. Up to 24mbps Broadcall uses ADSL2+ and is more sensitive to the internal telephone wiring in the house than upto to 8mbps ADSL. In checking and doing this for customers I have found that the speed can sometimes double. I have seen over 20mbps download speed for someone close to the exchange before.

    UW Distributor.

While I may not choose to pay UW's prices, they are free to charge what they want - if people feel that the price is acceptable for them for what UW deliver that's fine by me.
The issue is that if I was one of Keggs's prospects and asked for the price I would pay per kWH he couldn't tell me (or would tell me, but not accurately).
How then can I make an informed decision?
  • Of course, as has been borne out by my figures, the potential speed of the throughput *can* have an effect on the figures you obtain. I was previously with Sky Max (up to 16mb at the time) and achieved speeds around 3.2mb (although the speeds were far less stable than they are with my UW BB). As can be seen from my numerous speed test postings, my UW BB (up to 24mb) seems to be rock solid at 4.11 and upload solid at .84mb.

Talktalk charge £4 per month extra for up to 24mb, whereas it's included with UW. Other providors also tend to charge extra (if they actually can offer the option, of course). I like the fact it's included with UW, as, in my case, are phone line rental and all my calls. Very tidy solution putting aside the price advantage.

You know exactly what I mean by the phrase not a paid salesman.

Yes I am a salesman in the general sense of word. Everything in life is selling whether you receive financial reward or not. I have nevr denied this. But there is a subtle difference between what I & other people in network marketing do and what people who work for a company and go around the country for instance selling pills and potions, energy and receiving a salary plus commission every month.

I sell my services as a professional dance teacher to my pupils. I get paid. But ask any of my pupils if I am a salesman then would say no. He is a dance teacher.

You know exactly what I was implying yet once again you deliberately try to 'twist' it to suit your own argument.

As for miss selling unless the rules have changed (perhaps Aveneger can correct me if I am wrong) I am not supposed to calculate anybody's energy usage and compare it to UW's tariffs. UW has that responsibility.

Incidentally, I haven't heard of any saleman selling other companies energy do any sort of calculation yet they continually phone people up including me and tell me they are cheaper than my current supplier. How do they know? If eople fall for that (and can imagine they do) that is miss selling.

Have to say I do find it a bit rum when a Big 6 employee tries to pin the 'misselling' accusation on UW. You just have to check out this forum on any day of the week to see absolutely appalling misselling going on from the big 6. The latest one involves Scottish Power doorsteppers claiming as they are the sole providors of leccy to that particular neighbourhood (oh really?) their prices are guaranteed to be cheaper. Presumably these people have been trained to within an inch of their lives so what gives?

That isn't true. Again a misunderstanding. I said I AM not allowed / supposed to do calculations because the company itself determines which user profile the customer will be put on - low, standard and high. If I worked it out and told them that this is what profile they will be on and it turns out to be something different where does that leave me.

I can tell prospects what the tariffs are for their region. If the customer want to work it out they have to do it themselves. This is what Nigewick said.

If there is a particular issue I am not sure of then I contact UW HO and either relay the information or as I have done so in the past if it is complicated get the UW person at HO to explain.
As I said in a previous post I personally do not like the new system as UW relies on the energy database system I believe where before they gave customer a more accurate profile from copies of their own bill. While I can understand the reasoning behind UW's new approach (it's what the main energy companies do I believe) I personally do not agree with it. It was also something else that set UW apart from the energy companies.

You argue that about untrained IDs. I agree but you fail to realise that people joining UW as IDs are not interviewd for a job; they are not trained salesman looking to further their career or even trained to be salesmen and women. They are everyday people who are looking to make a little more money or build a new life for themselves. They don't join UW to sell energy, telephony. They join for a myriad of other reasons.

UW sells these products, IDs jobs are to build relationships.

Avenger pointed out that other energy companies now have a personal point of contact. But I would suggest that's all it is. They don't give out their personal number; they don't go round to people's houses to sort out any problems. Their job I suggest is just to answer queries and get others to a particular job.

I've never condoned or tried to excuse mis-selling in any form. To compare accurately we would need to look at the number of complaints per sale for each company. You'll probably find that each of the big 6 has made more sales this year than UW (probably lost more too).

A few pages back you proved fairly conclusively you couldn't even do this accurately - and you are an experienced ID.
