Aah, Mr Crabtree I presume. I used to like Les Kellett for comedy purposes.

Aahh, yes, Les Kellet was my personal fave also. He looked just like my grandad and was probably as as old of him at the time. The usual gist of his [STRIKE]scripts[/STRIKE] fights was he was repeatedly fore-arm smashed by his opponent until he was groggy and ready for dropping dead then miraculously he would find some 'life' and win the fight in one move. Those were the days, eh?

HAVE YOU SEEN QUENTIN'S CASHBACK CARD??
  • Cardew wrote: »
Yes of course it is true.

The point was that your champion(with some justification) slates other companies for insisting they stay with the company 12 months to get a discount.

However when UW introduce a one-off inducement, for new customers only, that is subject to a 12 month lock-in, it meets with universal applause from the UW fraternity.

The main problem I have with npower is that the annual discount is shown in the figures used on the switching sites and I think that is entirely wrong. I reckon the vast majority of punters signing up for npower through the switching will have no idea of the T&C (let's be honest, even T&C chaser Quentin embarrassed himself with this one, lol) Of course, UWs £100 annual 'bonus'/discount/inducement call it what you will will NOT be shown in the figures. Personally I'm glad about that. T'would be nice if Eon's dodgy 'no discount on final bill' T&C was shown on energyhelpline but alas. Still, it's MSE-recommended so it must be entirely kosher.

  • BTW, can any ID fill me in more with regard to UWs internet phone line thingy? My mate has a kid away at Uni and I was telling him about this today but sort of failed on account of not knowing the full SP, lol.

He's already going to come over to the 'dark side' by taking the 4 services so would have 24/7 inclusive calls but he was wondering if this internet 'thingy' would be any good for his son. He has his own router in his digs. Anyone?

Not to mention the 12 month minimum (auto-renewing?) contract. But as long as you are happy the whole thread will be...

Carmine is so worried that his argument doesn't stack up he makes an accusation about a competitor in the middle. Note that he doesn't attempt to back this up.

It was a question - that is after all what "how?" signifies!

Please explain - for my benefit, if nobody else - what you mean about UW's 'standalone' calls blowing away similar BT calls.

    An example would be nice!

Call charges. They blow BTs out of the water. And even away.

    Example? You only want one??
    OK, daytime calls. Local/National

    UW 2.45p/min (8p connection charge)

    BT 4.5p/min (5.25p from 1/10) (8p connection charge, 9.05p from 1/10)

Effectively, from 1/10 you can make a 5 min daytime call with UW for the price of a 2 min BT daytime call.

    Hi Carmine

As no one has answered I'll answer instead. Don't want to get involved in any more debates. I've had enough but will answer your question.

The internet phone line is just like having an extra telephone line but without the cost of a new fixed landline. You insert a phone into the socket of the adaptor and the adaptor is inserted into the router.

    That's it.

The cost is £50 connection and you get up to 2 lines with their own numbers. The number is similar to the homephone number of the person's account.

Line rental is £2 per line inc VAT. If he only wants 1 line that';s OK but if he decided later to have a second line there will be another connection charge. So it could be worth paying £4 for 2 lines but obviously that's up to friend.

I was hoping my son (he's off to Surrey unithis weekend) would use mine. But unfortunately, in his case it isn't possible. Havent a clue why but my son said it wouldn't work in his hall of residence. He's doing computing so I'll have to take his word for it.

    Hope that helps.

Is that really the best you can do?

How about evening calls? - free on BT

How about weekend calls - free on BT

How many daytime calls in a month would it take for BT Anytime at £4.95 for all calls 24/7(including 0870/0845) to be the better bet?

Jannienew who raised this issue was talking about very long calls to her Granny(presumably at weekends/evening). Wouldn't they cost with UW - free with BT.
She was particularly keen to know UW do free evening and weekend calls - like BT.
If they were during the day, what about BT Anytime?

So run that by me again please with what you consider average numbers of calls?

So once again a statement with no basis of fact is trotted out in the hope that it will become the 'gospel' according to Carmine.

No wonder none of your disciples rushed in to help you out.

Just in amplification of my post above – as I expect I won’t get any sensible response from Carmine about average calls.

If you make 3 evening/weekend calls a day with UW am I correct that this will cost 36p a day? £10.80 a month – free on BT

If you make just 2 short weekday daytime calls of 5 minutes duration.(40 calls a month) That would cost £8 with UW.

So on that very modest use of the telehone, that would appear to show that UW would charge £18.80 a month.

Doesn’t that make BT Anytime at £4.95 a month? seem to be a better bet?

Incidentally with BT Anytime you get 200 free texts a month included, and I did mention call minder and caller ID for free didn't I?

A genuine question here(as I can’t see the info in the UW website). The BT prices include the VAT. Are the UW prices quoted ex-VAT – it appears they might be as they refer to rounding up the ex-VAT price to the nearest penny.

Would any UW ID like to help Carmine out here and explain how for standalone call charges he is adamant " They blow BTs out of the water. And even away"

Perhaps I have got things wrong? perhaps you feel that 2 daytime calls a day is excessive?

Nige/Keggs you are always quoting Carmine as the UW guru - no help forthcoming?

    That seems a good system.

I got all that free with BT - no £50 connection charge, a second line, No £2 rental, caller ID and call minder on both lines for free(inclusive in the zero charge)

I know you are not returning - but couldn't you find it in your heart to help Carmine - and indeed Janninew - on the question of UW's Standalone charges.

    Hi Cardew

Not wishing to be pedantic, but do you get this all free with BT, or is it included in your phone bundle. You know how some contributors find that using the word free can be misleading. ;)

Also, can the free phone be used when "roaming" anywhere in the world that has an internet connection available and, would the call charges be the same as your bundled call charges. i.e if you had inclusive 24/7 calls, would this also include the "roaming" calls?

Just trying to clarify if your reply was comparing like with like.
