On the subject of Broadband speed, and without making any 'Party Political' points!, I wonder just what difference getting high speed makes to the vast majority of domestic users.

I get around 3mb in UK and frankly that is quite acceptable for myself. Downloading Iplayer or UTube type videos they simply play without any buffering.

I have a place in the USA where I get 'blindingly fast' cable and I notice little difference in downloading from the same sites.

Now admittedly if I were to 'multi-task' and be downloading from several sites simultaneously when in UK then it would be noticeable.

Those are my thoughts, not statements of fact. Would any guru care to comment?

    Hi Cardew,

Good point, but I think the way things are going with the likes of BBC Iplayer and streaming people now want to use their broadband in other ways than just surf and pick up mail. The problem that I can see here in the UK is the old cooper wire. I can see it being the case that broadband speed is going to be a big thing in years if not months to come.

The thing is how many people would they need to get to pay for top of the range broadband in order for them to upgrade the system?

Just out of interest (seeing as this must be the second or maybe third time you've posted this exact comment?), would you mind expanding on this and giving your reasons why?

    Not a peep then?

If it's left to BT it just will never happen as the company are basically on their knees. A disastrous foray into IT consulting and global expansion has basically laid them low for years to come. Their share price is in the bargain basement, they have a multi billion pound black hole in their pension provisions and they have only now seen fit to cut the dividend payments to a level commensurate with the current performance of the company.

I'm not as pessimistic about the old copper wiring, like I said yersterday it wasn't that long ago I was told my line was borderline 1mb, now it's capable of about 8-10 times that. These improvements have obviously all happened at exchange level so I'm assuming there is still more to come?

Do you view youtube vids in the evening, Cardew? Does it work? If you read the embarrassingly bad user reviews of BTs BB service on dslzone the vast majority complain of severe throttling at peak times. The Indian call centre gets a teeny weeny bit of a slating as well  BT are rated below even Tiscali on that site, which is unbelievable TBH. The 2 ISPs they manage to 'better' are Virgin and Karoo :p. Ouch.

I have watched youtube and similar(live leak) and just tried a few this evening as a test, and not had any problems - could be that I am lucky.

I have had dealings with their Indian call centre and can understand the frustration of dealing with them. I had a problem a couple of years ago, that turned out to be a problem in the local exchange. I finally got an Openreach engineer who bypassed my local exchange to prove the point.

However my point(question) was not BT specific, but that 3mb seems more than adequate for my needs and I suspect most domestic customers.

As you are asking questions - one in return! You didn't answer post #2755 and I genuinely am not sure of the point you were making?

To you people who seem to know about broadband, can you answer me this question (no-one has in the past, which I do find curious): No matter how far from the exchange you are and also how good or bad your line attenuation, isn't there still potential for greater speed by using an up to 24mb broadband service as opposed to an up to 8mb broadband service?

Not claiming to know much about this, but this is how I see it.
I have a 30 year old Lada, my neighbour has just won the lottery and spent stupid money on a sports car.
His car can achive up to 212 mph, my lada 62.5 downhill if full and not into the wind.
However, the speed limit on my road is 20mph and it's full of pot holes.
So neither of us are able to demonstrate the full speed of our cars, and there will be no difference in speed.
The speed of your connection will depend on a few things, the wires, the 'packaging' of the data, how may other people around you are online and what they are doing, and any control set by your ISP. (I've heard that Virgin/NTL/Telewest have practiced bandwidth throttling in the past.)

Apologies, I genuinely didn't see post 2755 until now. The link should have taken you to 'Miss Moppet's' posting history (you already know I'm obsessed with such things :p). 'Her' posts, when seen chronologically and in isolation just seem so 'false' and pre-meditated. Her 'grand entrance', when this thread had clearly 'died down', was also highly dubious, especially considering its potentially incendiary content. My conclusion is 'Miss Moppet' has definitely 'been here' before. We get lots of first time posters on this thread, from both sides of the 'divide' I hasten to add. They rarely stay long. In fact, 'Miss Moppet' has surprised me by posting as much as 12 times (seems to have disappeared back into the ether now though. Unless 'she' makes a comeback after reading this post ;)).

PS What became of 'energyman'?? Anyone remember that one?

PPS In a rare moment of naked honesty I will reveal I'm basically rubbish at most things (genuinely) but one thing I have a definite knack for is 'seeing though' people, as my mother used to call it. I'm the same in 'real life'. Just been watching that TV programmne on the killers masqerading as 'victims' and my father (who was watching it with me) remarked that he remembered I'd suggested many of the people had done the deed at the time. Maybe I'm ever so slightly 'savant' in that respect (I'm certainly obsessional, that's for sure).

I think it is not too difficult to 'read' people when you see them in the 'flesh'. As you say, the murderer on TV appealing for witnesses. - which is why I have always been convinced that a high profile couple with a Portugal connection are totally innocent and accusations in the press a disgrace! but we won't go there!

Not so sure that it is so easy to spot the connection on internet posts, although without doubt some try it on.(post 2658?). You have implied a couple of people were of that ilk in this thread - 'conmenot' who posted such illuminating reports on a UW convention - was one I believe, and I didn't get any such vibes. Similarly with 'Miss Moppet' who registered 3 months before she posted(and besides she was nice about me!!!)

That said you could be right, but I doubt we will ever find out.

    P.S.
I have never worked for BG, had any connection with BG etc etc;)

    Carmine

I’ve noticed you haven’t complained about tinybills4u who joined in May which I feel a lot of people will think suspicious considering you’re so chummy with him and probably because he agrees with you, which is a must in your book. Your remarks about me as usual Carmine are insulting, you’re so incredibly rude. You have in my opinion; all the classic hallmarks of a typical cyber bully and you appear to have a necessity to bully someone, which is rather disturbing.

You’ve repeatedly accused me of being anti UW but that turned out to be complete and utter rubbish as I was thanked publically by 3 UW reps for my post number 2756. I also received a posted apology by one rep and an extremely nice private apology by another. It seems to me if you think I’m anti UW you must be the only one. May I suggest you actually read the posts before commenting in future.

I shall reiterate for you Carmine, the purpose of me coming onto this thread was to see what UW was all about, I established that it wasn’t for me but I was happy to agree with the excellent posts of the UW reps who showed the sort of customer who would benefit by being a customer of UW.

I suggest you get treatment for your paranoia as soon as possible.
