Your ASDL2+ broadband speed is limited by various factors, least of all who sends you the bill. You download speed is largely determined by your line attenuation figure, log into your router and the figure along with other data will be displayed. The higher the attenuation number, the lower your speed. Live further away from a BT exchange, and you attenuation numbers will rise. It has zero to do with UW, or another ASDL2+ ISP.

If anyone on 'normal' BB wishes to see an estimate of their predicted ASDL2+ speed with any providor, enter your attenuation number here..clicky.

Yes I'm well aware of how the different versions of ADSL work etc.
This small tool will give you an estimate of the maximum speed your line can support on an ADSL2+ service.
The various tools on the net give estimates of predicted speed for your line attenuation and I was asking to see actual speeds achieved when using UW broadband. You say that "it's zero to do with UW, or another ASDL2+ ISP" but that is simply not true.

As UW reps keep talking about the UW 24Mbps broadband package, is it really too much to ask what speeds users actually achieve on this package?

Tell me how I can lower my line attenuation then?

I don't think it is to much to ask espresso at the end of the day and once again just my own view I did not think I would get 24Mb broadband service as the chance of getting this where I am is very very very slim due to how far I am from the exchange. However I have noticed since Jan/Feb this year my line speed has gone up from around 4Mb to around 6MB.

To you people who seem to know about broadband, can you answer me this question (no-one has in the past, which I do find curious): No matter how far from the exchange you are and also how good or bad your line attenuation, isn't there still potential for greater speed by using an up to 24mb broadband service as opposed to an up to 8mb broadband service?

Reason I ask this is when I first went on broadband (many moons ago) BT actually sent an engineer round (at no cost, I'm assuming this was when BTs shares were £15, lol) and he told my line was 'borderline 1mb'. AFAIK, no improvements have been made to the copper wiring etc going into my house, the only improvements have been in the actual exchange, and now my line is capable of much greater speed. You see what I'm getting at?

You obviously can't change the attenuation between the exchange and your property and in some area the lines are of inferior (cheaper) aluminium rather than copper.

However different ISP's can give what they want to give regarding maximum speeds.

All ISP's are certainly not equal e.g. different ISP's can give different speeds over the same line on basic ADSL.

It just seems a bit odd that only one new forum member has posted their actual speed result.

    Hi 1carminestocky

Yep I am with you on this one, I would like to know how this works as I called UW tech support team just to find out about my speed and they said they would look at my line, once this was done they come back to me to say that they had to get somthing done on the line at the exchange and now once done I would be looking at speeds around 7Mb.

The website that I use to find out true speeds is called samknows if you google it then you can enter your phone number or postcode and it tells you all the BT stuff about your exchange and what speeds you should be looking at.

    Cheers

It's simply due to the changes in technology over the years. Before ADSL max (up to 8Mb) was rolled out in 2005, ADSL came in four speeds 256kb, 512kb, 1Mb and 2Mb.

    Hi espresso

Cheers for this, so thats what ADSL is all about, am I correct in thinking then ADSL2 is the one where the 24Mb comes into play?

I recall dial up, good god how did we live with that! :rotfl:

That's exactly what i'm getting at. So surely with ADSL2 (up to 24mb) I (and everybody else) have more chance of getting a faster line speed than with ADSL (up to 8mb)?

Edit: When I was 'borderline 1mb' I'm sure there was 2mb BB available but according to BT my line couldn't 'take' it. Now it can 'take' much much more (and I'm 1.58km away from the exchange). It seems clear that the only difference is the newly installed equipment in the exchange being capable of forcing more data through the (existing and old) copper wiring into my house. Surely ADSL2 is just a continuation of this?
