It does not have to be unique as long as it works for those who choose it. I chose to pay the least for my utilities by buying from Utility Warehouse and using the pre payment card to best advantage. I am happy with my decision. You did not choose it and appear to be unhappy with the fact that others do choose the company. I live with the fact that many people choose British Gas, Eon, nPower, Southern Electric etc. You're going to have to live with the fact many people are different to you and would be happy to choose Utility Warehouse.

This is the thing I don't get. The people who see the benefit of using the card AFAICT never claim it's good for anybody but themselves. But, conversely, the people who don't view the card (actually I think it's more UW than the card) as a benefit for them then seek to try and tell the people who are using it that it isn't for them. It's disrespectful and arrogant behaviour in my book. I just don't see for instance why Cardew pays so much for the phone line/BB package he has with BT but that's up to him. i only ever mention it when he says something about UWs services being expensive because that, to me, is hypocritical of him to do so knowing he pays what most serious money savers (and this would DEFINITELY include Quentin, btw) would view as a silly price for the deal he has...

    Of course.

    You misunderstood.

UW reps claim that it is a benefit of your club that it offers a prepay card which you can use to reduce your expensive utility bill.

That is unique. But using a prepayment card and being able to get discounts off shopping at selected stores isn't the unique province of uw.

Why not buy cheaper utilities in the first place, then use a "proper" bank/building society prepayment card with similar discounts, but get the discounts off the shopping - then you would be better off through the exercise, not just managing to make the utility bill "competitive".

    What is your point?

You are the one embarking on this "clear out the rogue uw reps" campaign.

I'm sure you can think of a way of getting her id if you are serious! (Didn't you pick up any detective training whilst serving us as a copper?)

Post your deal up, Quentin, and let's have a butchers. It's significant, I feel, that main person you are arguing with, Nigel, has put up his figures for public scrutiny. Like I have said before, with apologies if you think it rude, put up or shut up, my friend.

Is it not true that some of those same Big 6 also have some higher tariffs than Utility Warehouse? If so, why do they not offer everybody their lowest tariff and keep prices there?

I put in the usual 3.300kWh/20,500kWh for gas/electricity in my area.

It came up with 60 tariffs.

UW were in 52nd, 53rd and 58th position out of the 60.

There was 1 big 6 tariff slightly more expensive than UW in 55th position, BG Zero carbon.

    I don't think so.

The pre payment card does allow those who choose to use it to pay less for their utilities.

Because I CHOOSE to obtain my utilities from Utility Warehouse and use the pre payment card as it is the best deal for MY wants. It is my choice, my decision, my pick, my selection, my preference, my option. I have voted with my money to be a Utility Warehouse customer. Out of all the suppliers available, I elected to go with Utility Warehouse. They are my nomination as a utilities supplier. I prefer them to all the others because I get the best deal for me in my circumstances from Utility Warehouse.

How can it be the best deal?

The figures don't really matter, but say you get £20 a month off your bill using the card, which means you get your utilities £4.50 cheaper than the competition, why not go to the cheaper companies, and get another card with similar shopping discounts.

Your shopping would be £20 cheaper, and your utilites bill £4.50 more.

Meaning a move away would net you £15.50!

And by using the pre payment card to good effect a person could still pay less than with any of them, if they so choose.

You didn't answer the second question:- why do they not offer their lowest prices to everybody and keep them there? The obvious answer is "because they make more profit." Utility Warehouse have come up with a way to make a good profit and still have customers who pay less for their utilities than with any other company, provided they accept certain conditions. Obviously it is not for everybody but it suits me and many others.

You are happy with your club. No argument with that.

You say using the card means your utility bill is cheaper than using other suppliers.

But were you to go to those cheaper suppliers of utilities, and still get the same money you now get off your utilities knocked off your shopping instead you would be much better off financially.

You are worse off financially by having everything in the one basket.
