If sweeps are so lucky why aren't you guys all retired in the bahamas or equivalent already
All you have to do is shake each others hands and you'd all be minted.0 -
Why, muckybutt in a wedding dress.....I would pay to see that! :rotfl:
Cheeky !We could start an MSE petition, something to do with charity sweeping...
All donations greatfully recieved money or beer tokens will do just fineYou may click thanks if you found my advice useful0 -
What do you mean, they should all be in the Bahamas by now? Our two local sweeps are men of property. One has a large house locally plus 2 holiday homes abroad. The other owns about 5 rental properties. Where theres muck theres money.0

Don't disagree about the line, "where there is muck there is brass", in my neck of the woods.
However, i don't know many sweeps, and the ones i do know are not multi millionaires.
They graft hard and they earn their money.
I don't associate having a lot of property with having money as quite often it means you have a lot of potential assets (which is different).0 -
I said it with a smile
But believe me, these guys are doing well. It may change as quite a few more sweeps are entering business in this area now whereas they had a virtual monopoly before but they are of retiring age anyway now.

Retiring?! Well it's a nice thought but I can't see it happening! We might be everyones best friend at this time of year, and we start crumbling when the customer says "can you come after 8pm as I'll be at work" or "don't you work on Sundays?" and we give in and go out anyway. Come the warm weather though - and nobody wants to know us!!0

It is hard to imagine that it is a lucrative trade. Some of the prices given on this forum are peanuts suggesting a very modest income. Maybe some used their common sense and invested in property when it was affordable. It is expensive down here, £200,000 buys a 2 bed terraced house. You'd need a good salary or a large deposit to purchase one.Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0 -
As GF says, sweeping is a very seasonal buisness from Sept through to about now the buisness is decent and you can easily make a living from it, from now till easter it'll just be on tickover an no one wants us in. Then there will be a small blip when folks start running down the stoves / chimneys and get them spring cleaned. Quiet again then through the warm months till we get to the cooler months then it all starts again.
Now I advertise 365 days a year and I could not do this just as a main business which is why my sweeping is always done on a sat and sunday and occasionally during the week at busy periods, my customers like the weekends as it works better for them not having to take time off. During the week I work full time. Worked like that for the last nearly 9 years now, make a comfy living from it but I am by no means rich. You may click thanks if you found my advice useful0
