I rang a Durham chimney sweep -master guild qualified website etc- Mr S......., and when he came, he said it was a "roof job" and he couldn't fit it in that day as he had 7 other chimneys to do! (He had been booked two weeks before however and asked me no questions whatsoever on fone, just took the appt quickly). He then moaned and groaned when he came, about a liner already in the chimney, the type of chimney etc, just bad attitude shaking head tutting to himself (the phrase "dead -wood" sprung to mind..) and then had the gall to say I owed him a £40 call out fee (as he had driven 10 miles) even tho he couldnt do the job (obv didn't want the hassle) ! I paid him just to get him out the house... be warned.0

I used www.sootyandco.co.uk for one in Belfast. Only charged £20 for the sweep and got my coal off him too:money:0

Blimey, a king among sweeps there. Hang on to him!!I am in Leicestershire and paid £30 last friday to have 1 Chimney done. This was a 2 hr job though as he stripped down the stove and cleaned each part, swept the unlined chimney and confirmed it didnt need lining, cleaned the hearth and Mantel and surrounding area, then went on the roof to check chimney pots, pointing and ensure bird crowl was still in correct. Top man and worth every penny!0

Oh yes
Was at one the other weekend actually, nice grub laid on afterwards as well
To be honest its a very rare occurrance up Norf, it seems to be a much more southern tradition for some reason. I'm always frightened to death in case I get the bride's dress mucky !You may click thanks if you found my advice useful0 -
I get asked all the time if I "do weddings"! Never have done yet - I think I'd want to go to a wedding where a sweep was attending first - just to get the gist of it before going in cold. The other thing up here is that while the brides parents might be chuffed to bits that the sweep has turned up, the rest of the gathered crowd are all nudging each other and whispering "look at the state of this !!!!!! who's just gatecrashed!" as the younger generation haven't heard of the tradition!! Could be awkward!
I did have a customer from London who had retired up here - he absolutely insisted on shaking my hand when I'd done as his mother always told him it was good luck to touch a sweep, AND I had to give his wife a hug!! Bless 'em!0
