    I'd say the sensible thing to do is to burn in such a manner that soot and tar doesn't build up in your chimney in the first place.

    There's no reason at all for soot to be deposited - cars, aircraft, gas cookers and almost all other modern burning appliances burn in such a way (i.e. stoichiometrically) that all the fuel is burnt, leaving no gases from which soot can be formed. Decent stoves also have that ability. Open fires don't, and neither do stoves which aren't leakproof or installed incorrectly, so a sweep will always be necessary in those circumstances. And also usually for decent stoves which have the ability but are used in a manner which ensures soot is formed, as is usually the case.
