  • £30 to sweep. Inspection was £80 - can recommend a good sweep.

I think your local fire brigade may keep a list of recommended sweeps ..

It seems you tend to get ripped off in the towns. One guy in Birmingham charged a friend £65  In my village I pay £25.

They are generally about £50 per chimney in N Wales. An absolute rip-off if you ask me. For that price you can buy your own ash vacuum and brush set.

I am in Leicestershire and paid £30 last friday to have 1 Chimney done. This was a 2 hr job though as he stripped down the stove and cleaned each part, swept the unlined chimney and confirmed it didnt need lining, cleaned the hearth and Mantel and surrounding area, then went on the roof to check chimney pots, pointing and ensure bird crowl was still in correct. Top man and worth every penny!

Sounds like a proper job was done there, a sweep after my own hearth :)

I'm looking at this from a chimney sweeps point of view as I am one.

Did you phone around first for quotes ?

Did you get an approved sweep ie NACS or GOMS ? you will inevitably pay slightly higher costs there as they have registration and other overheads to cover for starters.

Did they leave you with a sweep certificate ? some charge extra for that.

Did you ask for a price before it was swept ?

Were there any problems with nests etc ?

Chimneys are not just a straight up an down and quick flick around with a brush and thats it gimme your dosh you know

Personally I charge £30 for one chimney - local call if I have to go further afield then the price alters accordingly. If theres more than one chimney per address then its an extra £10 per chimney, some sweeps will charge them all at full price but that is their choice.
I charge extra for nest / bird removal, and if for some reason the job cannot be done then a call out charge of half the sweep cost will be applicable.

At the end of the day its my living and so I charge accordingly, i'm sure you wouldnt work for peanuts so why should we ? I'm comfortable with what I charge and so are my customers, I often get tips and bonuses as well for doing a decent clean job too I might add, last but not least - my advice is always free :)

  • I have just had my woodburner swept for £45 in Devon which i feel is a fair price. this is the first time had it swept so did not know where to start i had a recomendation from a neighbour and looked on line, whilst some were cheaper some were alot more expensive.

The chap that did ours was excellent , I looked in his van and was surprise at who much equipment he had > I was expecting rods brush and vaccum but no much much more.

The way i see it you pay your money and makes your choice , but what professional could earn a living with cost of equipment, fuel and van and pay tax if you only paying penuts.
