I'm so disappointed - I've had a tub of quark in the fridge since my last trip to Asda (we only have a Ts locally) and decided that I fancied a creamy pasta dish today for lunch.

I softened onions, garlic & herbs and added the quark and some salt but it was horrible! It had a really grainy texture - I'm not sure if I over heated the quark maybe? Anyway, more than half of the pasta is in the bin cos I just couldn't bear to eat it... I know it's a waste but I'd rather eat something I was going to enjoy. I've had an alpen light bar (1/2 HEB) and some fruit instead.

Quark is hard to heat without it going like cottage cheese - but not "grainy" like sand. I have made cheesy cream sauces with it a few time. The art is in heating it slowly and serving imediately the minute it gets to the consistancy you want.
Well .. had sausage and beans for breaky, (low fat sausages from morrisons) and mircowave rice with salad and jacket (comfort food day LOL) so I am done for syns today I think. :rotfl:

Now I'm worried making this macaroni and cheese tonight. I'm using quark :(

Any ideas of what else I can do to make mac and cheese, limiting syns and using 1 hea

Quark is fine to cook with if you take it easy and only add it towards the end to heat through. Otherwise it will separate.

According to synsonline it's 1 syn per 100g if you buy it frozen but free if you buy it dried.

Thanks Maman - I've made a huge lasagne with a mixture of that and SW Ragu from one of the magazines. There's enough there for 6 really good-sized portions so that's under 1 syn per portion. Waited long enough for the frozen stuff - goodness knows how long I'll wait for the dried one!!!!

Lalamb it'll be fine. Mix the egg in with the quark and seasoning before putting it on the heat then heat really slowly. I also add a little bit of the cooking liquid from the pasta and then add the pasta even before it's heated enough - it'll continue heating while you stir the pasta into it.

So it could be made like a carbonara?

I don't know how you make carbonara but once the pasta is cooked and drained, mix the quark, egg and seasoning in the same pan with a little of the cooking liquid and put on the gas. While it's heating add the drained pasta to the pan and heat both together. At that stage I also added some of the grated cheese and really just stirred it until it was all mixed together. It's going in the oven so doesn't need to be heated completely through.

I'm one of those slow losers. I know lots of people say they've got a slow metabolism but mine's actually been measured medically and it's horrible. 1,150 calories a day is my 'resting amount' - ie the amount I need to eat to stay the same weight if I just sat around all day.

It's so low that the only answer for me is exercise, and I've had to come to accept it. I bet if you add some moderate calorie burining exercise into your routine this week and keep eating as well as you have done, you will have a great loss next weigh in. Chin up!

La Tasca is pretty horrible for this diet - it's all deep fried or dressings. BUt I would suggest anything from their salad line (ask for the dressing on the side so you can control it), or if you're hungry, a paella. All the tapas are no-nos because of the oil, as far as I can see. Ooh, apart from the baked langoustines. THey look nice! Hope that helps!

Oh bum! We're going for Tapas! it's a belated celebration of my 50th birthday ( last month), but one of my mates has so many food allergies - this is one of the places she can eat with a degree of confidence.

I've made some butternut squash, carrot and lentil soup - guess i'll have to fill up before I go tomorrow night!

I used Quark recently as the top layer of sauce on a lasagne with a bit of grated cheese on top.

It was very nice - nicer than the layer of cottage cheese I also used inside.

Ahhhhhh ok so it will be fine when it's in the oven, no danger of it separating at that stage? Actually that's probably a silly question because I've made the SW omelette using quark and it was fine.
