Hmmm, sounds familiar, this also happened to me. ::)
However, second time round wasn't nearly so bad. A few alterations and it was gone again..hope I'm not speaking too soon.
Fran, I found this useful. I've had a play about with it and it does notify you if any attempts are made to alter your startpage..

Have done that Ausielle, thanks.
At least this time I've run Hijack this (currently on my desktop!) and removed the Search Assistant and a couple of others that I know are bad while waiting for SpywareInfo forum reply, so hopefully will get it sorted - again! It looks really useful.

Advice from Spyware info was to run LOP uninstaller again - that got rid of Search Assistant thing and Meta acid/lies grim. I then had to restart in safe mode & delete them (but they weren't there - then). While I was there I saw a Altnet file and tried to delete it but it came back "cannot delete Altnet error while deleting key". When I restarted, Startpage Guard had detected something trying to alter browser settings (but it always returns it to your chosen one). So something is still lurking......

Have you tried running Giant again? When I ran it for the first time it found Altnet(amongst others) and removed it. Think I might actually pay for it as it seems to pick up when other programs/hardware is trying to access my machine.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

Well I've still been having problems and kept running all the checks etc. Today, Norman was turned off and I couldn't get it started again so downloaded AVG. AVG found Downloader.Dyfica (trojan) and P2E.S. I looked up info on Downloader (no info found on P2E.S) and turned off System Restore (to get rid of anything lurking there). In safe mode I was going to run AVG but couldn't get it to (is it impossible to run it when in safe?). While there I ran Spybot and AdAware and both found quite a bit of stuff. Everything seems to be working much quicker and I haven't had any problems with internet/browser/email/antivirus as has been happening all the time. Broadband seems faster - but I've said that before!Torgwen..........

Hi
Just tried it and can confirm the AVG6 Service will not start when in safe mode. Without this the software cannot run.
What problems are you still having (I'm easily confused!)0 -
avast will work in safe mode and has the option of a boot-time scan which i found very useful
but i'm saying that after changing back to avg.0
