I'm afraid you've lost me now! To my knowledge, a printer needs to be hosted by 'something' (with the appropriate driver) for devices to be able to print to it (for instance, a printer connected directly to my router would still require me to install the appropriate print drivers on all of my computers to be able to print to that printer). Without 'something' hosting that printer, how would a device such as the iPad be able to find and print to that printer? I'm interested in learning in case I'm missing something!0 -
I do get what Apple are trying to do - end the need for printer drivers and the compatability issues such drivers can lead to. I'm juat pee'd off I didn't look into it more before I pounced on the "bargain printer" I found in Tesco. I've read about the excess heat issue but so far I've had no such problems. I still have a fairly powerful desktop which I'll be using for more intensive tasks such as Photoshop; the iPad's just my way of bringing the interweb out into the rest of the house in a way that's accessible to all.0

Wow, what have I started, lol. For the record I've never been a fan of Apple in the past but I recently got to use an iPad 2 and found it intriguing. When the latest one came out last weekend I thought I'd take the leap and see what all the fuss is about. I'm so glad I did! It works wonderfully. More importantly my wife, who is (was) a technophobe is now lying on the couch with the iPad in her hands because it makes a great substitute for the Radio Times. I meanwhile can actually see my wife because I'm not sitting in the computer (geek) room on my PC or PS3. It also hasn't crashed once since I got it and the dreaded iTunes does seem to have improved a bit although having to use it at all is far from ideal. Furthermore, my dad, who's in his 70's, would love to be surfing the web but most of the time I'm his go-to call centre when he's on the PC. I think things would be different if he had an iPad. I love it. So much so that I've ordered an iPhone 4S which will allow me to tether the iPad when out & about.
A right can of worms was opened:rotfl:
Just a word of warning as an iTunes, iPad2 and iPhone4S user. With these devices you have the option to sync them over wifi, don't do it as I found it caused iTunes to lag terribly. Which caused me utmost frustration.
Thankfully it's ok now and working perfectly, and when you get used to iTunes you will find it's a great bit of software and works very well.
With regards to using AirPrint, from your iPad. I hope you don't encounter a problem I had, in that the service Bonjour which allows AirPrint to work was being blocked by my router (cisco one)
I had to buy a cheap wireless access point and connect through that for it to work:)
*edit* the heat issue mentioned only covers the 3G models, not wifi only ones;)0 -
That's good to know re the heat issue as I didn't go for the 3G version. My routers a BT Homehub so I know there'll be know issues with it as BT are brilliant! Aye, right.0

So chuffed am I with my iPad, I now have 2. One personal and one for business use. Coupled with a 500gb Seagate Satellite Go Flex external hard drive, it's a great lightweight, user friendly device. For business use Keynote, Numbers and Pages it works working on the move a pleasure. Good battery life, far better than any laptop. Believe me, it's the way forward.Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. I'm sorry, I don't apologise. That's just the way I am. Homer (Simpson)0 -

not when you're working with whacking great spreadsheets it's not !! Even a 15" lappy can be a pain for these, much better on a desktop with a min 19" screen...for me a tablet it way too small..........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
I think tablets are the way forward for the majority of casual users. The iPad does most things well and some things superbly but I think more importantly is its accessibility. Just about anyone could pick it up and perform most tasks with relative ease.0

Any luck with the printer today?0 -
Oh yes, I forgot. Yes, I managed to return it with no problems. I was kinda expecting to be told they wouldn't accept it since I'd fitted the ink tanks and printed a couple of test pages (via USB from my PC) but even knowing this it wasn't a problem. That's excellent service in my opinion. I'm going to do more research before buying another one though.0

As an airprinter I bought this one Cheap genuine carts and works very well:)
Apple is fine when you've got used to it, and is in fact quite unrestrictive when using the correct apps;)
Did you say the printer was for the Ipad?
If you had, and they still sold it to you, then you can certainly return it, irrespective of whether you've unpacked it or not.Under no circumstances may any part of my postings be used, quoted, repeated, transferred or published by any third party in ANY medium outside of this website without express written permission.
