That's what I thought. Damn Apple. I can't see any technica reason why I can't print directly from Safari or whatever via my network. This is very frustrating and I think Apple should make this clearer before the customer parts with his/her money. I feel ripped off to be honest.
Im not sure its apples problem? If you bought a gas cooker, got it home then found out you dont have gas, is it the manufactures Fault?
. Did you ask instore when you bought the printer if it was ipad compatible?

I've installed the Epson app and it allows me to print but in such a clunky way that it renders the iPad a pain. I phoned Tesco and the rep said as long as I repackaged it as best I can they'll refund me. If they have one of the compatibles in-store I'll buy it immediately. If not I'll probably buy from Tesco Direct.

And to think people used to choose Apple over Microsoft because they thought Microsoft were trying to control everything.

Thinking about it at a high level, I can only assume the reason you need an AirPrint compatible printer is because a device needs what is known as a driver to know how to communicate with a peripheral. As Apple can't provide drivers themselves for every printer out there, the role of responsibility has been flipped to put the ball in the printer manufacturer's court to make their printers compatible with the iPad. This is why you can still print to any non-compatible printer as long as it's connected to a computer; the computer has the driver installed to communicate with the printer. This sounds more like a technical limitation than any sort of measure of control. Any/all printer manufacturers can make their printers AirPrint compatible if they so choose as far as I know.

EDIT - Reading around on the matter, I have confirmed that what I've written above is correct. Printer manufacturers simply need to do whatever it is they need to do to make their devices compatible with AirPrint and then it'll work.

Excellent, glad to hear it. You're better off buying a printer that's fully AirPrint compatible instead of using Epson's half arsed approach!

Apple never make it easy if it's not made by them... they want you to buy everything apple!

iPad is an iFad just like the iPhone... You should of just bought an Android tablet like the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

I'm not even sure if there are any other tablets that have the ability to print directly?

Does the Galaxy Tab print directly to a printer?

why should the printer manufacturers be @rsed to do this, for what is, let's be honest, still a very small niche market compared to windows-based devices ???? Have you considered it may not be worth the investment to them in development costs to shift maybe an extra couple of hundred thousand units at £3.50 per unit profit ???

I guess the ball is in the manufacturer's court. If enough people demand the feature, I guess they'll either have to include it, or lose a sale to another manufacturer who does. I suspect the market for wireless, direct printing is growing at the moment.

I'm still not convinced of the NEED for tablets just yet at all, having played with a couple (of both varieties I may add),never mind being able to print directly from them...

Absolutely agree the wireless printing market is growing, but it's being driven more by having a wifi printer with (probably) many windows-based laptops in a house (mum, dad, 2 kids with one each for example) but down to the sheer numbers of windows-based systems in existance, the bias will currently always favour those systems, and like it or not iThings are still a niche market.

Have you ever thought it's apple that's out of kilter, and it needs to do more to make IT'S devices more compatable with the rest of the world ???
