My eldest holiday with the lads....

But in this context nobody is subsidising anybody else. In a restaurant situation it isn't about bankrupting you, it's about fairness in that your extra money is paying for something more expensive that someone else has had.
Actually, being pedantic, 8 lads are sharing 2 apartments and presumably paying the cost of a flight + 1/4 of the rental for an apartment. The addition of the 9th lad in a double room increases everyone's share of the bill as his accomodation costs more that their's.
So this is like 8 people going for all-you-can-eat buffet at £10pp and agreeing to split the bill, and a 9th person turning up late and ordering a dish from the menu that costs £12 and the bill still being split.
Regardless, I'm not a tightwad who begrudges my friends a couple of quid, so I'd happliy pay the £19 in the OP's situation and would split the bill in the restaurant analogy.;)0 -

It is not a restaurant analogy, it is the hols, I have just asked my son to check with the travel agency that he owes no more that he is up to date as they would not talk to me as I am not on the travelling arrangements list and he came off the phone going ' I can't beleive this I can't believe it, the woman says I owe another £40 someone has dropped out' he is upstairs now ringing, texting, trying to find out what has gone wrong, what has happened, I have no idea apart from what he has just told me, I have offered to take him to the travel agency but he says he will talk to his mates first....0 -
I have done this already went into town from posting this morning and went to the travel agents and asked if I could pay the £19 for my son as he was quite stressed out about it and yes to re-iterate it was and is only £19 but to a lad it is a lot of money as said 4 hours work and he has not got unexpected money to flitter around especially not some that he did not even know he owed in the first place.
He has come back in thanked me and rang round his mates to tell them, all good.
What it has to do with me? I don't like seeing my son upset, terrible mother, shoot me.
Gosh, I bet that travel agents love your son and his mates. 9 of them constantly popping in to deposit a tenner here and there, then one of their mothers appears to desposit £19! Was it in coppers?:D
I can't understand why you wouldn't just give the £20 to your son? Going into the travel agents on his behalf to hand over £19 seems unneccessary to me. I'd have been embarassed if my mum did this, tbh. Loosen the apron strings a little!
And if £19 is the end of the world to him, I hope he's been realistic about spending money and has sorted travel insurance.:cool:0 -
There are a small number of people who seem to have become so reliant on MSE that they feel the need to share every insignificant detail of their lives and seek validation for every decision they make, regardless of how inconsequential it is.
If this is directed at me, two things for you, one is I have been recently quite poorly going from docs to docs as I mentioned in one post in someone elses thread so have not been on here for a while asnd two you are in everyone elses thread constantly bemoaning their problems/issues/reasons for posting, you feel strongly about something you do?0 -

Elvis what if it was? What if it was a moutain of 2ps, I went with a £20 if you absolutely must know and the lads deposits yes are £10 here and there that is al lthey have at the time what is wrong with that? Every little helps...
No, whatever you say I did a good thing for my son, he was at 6th form, I was in town, went past the agency paid it, looked forward to him coming home to tell him I had sorted it, he thanks me, is relived, rings up to confirm that it has gone through and he owes no more and then he gets told he has to pay the person who has dropped out around £40 so the woman on the phone said so he is upstairs ringing all his mates to ask them what is happening and if they knew this lad had pulled out...0 -
It is not a restaurant analogy, it is the hols,
Is it not a restuarant analogy for the extra person's meals? Or are they just B&B? Unless they're at least half board a £19 restaurant analogy sounds a bit expensive..?:DI have just asked my son to check with the travel agency that he owes no more that he is up to date as they would not talk to me as I am not on the travelling arrangements list and he came off the phone going ' I can't beleive this I can't believe it, the woman says I owe another £40 someone has dropped out' he is upstairs now ringing, texting, trying to find out what has gone wrong, what has happened, I have no idea apart from what he has just told me, I have offered to take him to the travel agency but he says he will talk to his mates first....
OMG! I think this warrants a new thread!
Why are you letting him speak to his friends? You should definitely get down to the travel agency straight away! Don't let the fact that you're not going on the holiday and have no idea what is going on with regards someone dropping out stop you! Get down there and sort this out for your son!0 -

Travel insurance comes within the price and he has the card also and on his easter break from 6th form he will be working 6 days a week apart from sunday for the days they have off to get the hol money together, ok?0 -
Victory, surely if someone has dropped out this would just go back to the original cost and who ever dropped out will lose their deposit?!
eta - I used to be a travel agent and I couldn’t care less if I used to have a customer pop in every day with a pound paid in pennies so long as the balance was paid on time!0 -
Victory what you need to find out, what your son needs to find out is if the last lad to join the trip was an 'add on'. I take it they had all paid in full until the new lad joined and then they were all going to pay the extra £19 each, is this correct?
If someone has dropped out last minute the travel agent should not have refunded anything. In group holiday bookings there is only one member of the group who can be the lead name and no member of a group travelling can walk into the shop, say he's dropped out and get his money back.
It is up to the group if someone drops out whether they stand his bill or not but in ordinary circumstances that person would lose their money or claim under insurance if it was something that would be covered.
Wait til he's found out the full details.0 -

he's absolutely doing the right thing, he needs to get to the bottom of it with everyone who's going on the holiday, then they need to sort it out at the travel agents.0
