To connect you will need a WiFi card. There are two types that will work on your PB laptop - the first is an external card (also known as PCMCIA) which slots into the card slot on the front left hand side of your laptop. This is very easy to install, but it will however stick out about an inch due to the antenna on the card. The second type is an internal MiniPCI card, but to install one of these you will also need to buy and install an internal antenna. Which can be tricky to do on a laptop, even for an experienced PC "tweaker" like myself.
To further confuse things, these cards basically come in three different varieties - 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g. The "a" is the slowest, and the "g" is the fastest. This is reflected in the price.

calibrax wrote:Sounds very strange... If it was a compatibility problem I would expect it not to work at all. If the PC works fine without it, it could be a faulty card - see if you can exchange it.
Just a thought... did you install a WiFi aerial in the case? If so, then it's possible that this could be shorting out against another component.
Steve
My mini pci card hasn't arrived yet. This wifi card is the old one I've been using for a year with my dell inspiron. It's a PCMCIA card. It's been running fine all day since that last post, by the way. Weird, eh?In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?

Personally I don't think it's worth getting unless you have a wireless network at home to connect to. But you can get an external PCMCIA WiFi card at pretty much any computer shop. Price can vary, anything from £15 - £50.

OK..... Bare with me here as I am simply trying to better understand stuff.
Is this not an easier way of removing both NAV?
ie, you enable it in the Start up...... Then remove it using the standard, Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove programs?

If you have that option (i.e. it shows up in add/remove programs), then yes! Problem many of us have is that NAV and NIS don't show up in add/remove programs, hence us having to do it the long and hard way!In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?

OK, thanks, I just read the section, (copied and pasted below), to mean that after following the section, it would appear in Add/Remove.
I guess that the portion.... "In some cases, you will not see ccApp listed in the System Configuration Utility window at all" applies.
I'll be on the case this evening, and will see how I get on.

To enable startup services on Windows XP
On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
In the Run dialog box, type the following and click OK:
msconfig
In the System Configuration Utility window, on the Startup tab, verify that the following file is checked:
ccApp
If ccApp is unchecked, then check it.
In some cases, you will not see ccApp listed in the System Configuration Utility window at all. In this case, simply go on to the next step.
In the System Configuration Utility window, on the Services tab, verify that all of the following services are present and checked:
Symantec Event Manager
Symantec Network Proxy
Symantec Password Validation
Symantec Settings Manager
ISSVC
Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect Service
Symantec Network Drivers Service
Symantec Core LC
If any of the entries named here are unchecked, check them. In some cases, you will not see one of the entries listed in the System Configuration Utility window at all. In this case, simply go on to the next item.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Click Yes to reboot the computer. The MSE Dictionary
