just a quick update re: installing a fresh copy of windows xp. It's the same as normal pc's, although you might want to have a copy of the drivers to hand (can be found on the packard bell web site).

Before you format and install windows, make sure you make a copy of the recovery disc onto a dvd just in case you ever need it in future. After this you can safely delete the 2nd partition and install windows onto it and enjoy using your laptop without all that PB crap on it ;)

oh btw-how do you get rid of that annoying beep sound every time the laptop boots up?

Could smeone please simplify the "clean up" process.... especially the removal ov NAV.

I've read and re-read the following.....

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2004071910434606?Open&src=&docid=2001092114452606&nsf=nav.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=

..... but there are so many "ifs" that might/might not apply, that it's giving me a sore head :(

  • Tojo, there's a walk through earlier on in the thread. Skip the first bit, as there is no NIS exe in add/remove programs. You have to download a file that will clear out symantec from the registry, then download a script from microsoft and install that, then manually remove the folders it states on the symantec page. I've got to go do it all again now on my replacement lappy. :(

All the files you need to download are linked to on that symantec page (link posted earlier in thread).

Removal of Norton Internet Security (Firewall & Antivirus) from the Packard Bell Easynote E6:

    STEP ONE

    Download then run this ftp://ftp.symantec.com/misc/consumer/nis/nis2004xp_reg_removal.reg
    Once complete delete that file.

    STEP TWO

Next download and install Windows Script 5.6 from here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=c717d943-7e4b-4622-86eb-

    STEP THREE

Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer.
On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, select Show all files or Show hidden files and folders.
    Click OK.
Delete the Norton Internet Security folders:

    C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security

If It comes up with an access denied error when you try and delete the Antivirus folder you need to:

    Open the folder
Hit Ctrl and A together (select all) All the files will then be highlighted
Find the file it said couldnt be deleted then press Ctrl and tap on that file (that one file will be deselected) you now hit delete and it will delete all the files except that one you deselected (you can delete that later)

So you should delete everything you can from C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security (you should now just be left with one folder in this directory called Antivirus which contains that one file you couldnt delete at that time

    Delete the following three folders:

    C:\Program Files\Symantec
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec

    Close Windows Explorer.

    Reboot

Go back to C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security and delete that final Antivirus folder and your done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know its a pain but this is THE ONLY WAY to get rid of it. Youll be glad you did!

OF COURSE YOU DO NEED ANTIVIRUS AND FIREWALL SOFTWARE but I suggest you use a different brand, try Mcafee.

Please note that when you run the Packard Bell utilty 'Smart Restore' after getting rid of Norton it will throw up an error because it cant find the norton files. Just click ignore and it works fine.

    Regards

    Rob

This is the/one of the posts that details the removal process. I've gone through it but still cannot get rid of the NIS and NAV listings in add remove programs. All it says is the the resource is unavailable.

Does it matter them being there?
  • Whoop, if you had NAV and NIS showing in add/remove programs, you should have just used that to remove them. Unless they get on your nerves, I doubt you really have to remove the two listings now. Otherwise, I guess you have to reinstall NIS and NAV to be able to remove them using the add/remove function.

I'm now back up and running on my new machine, and it's great. This one doesn't have the faults the last one had and is running like a dream. NAV, NIS and all the other crap has gone and I've got almost everything installed that I want installed now (nero, etc). Happy to find that the dvd writer is dual layer, too. Now just to reformat my Dell Inspiron and find all the discs and manual that came with it, as I've happily just flogged it. Total cost of upgrade to this machine = - £80. Can't be bad.

Doesn't really matter, but if you do want to get rid of them, you can.

    Instructions are here :

    Hope this helps!

  • Cheers MUNT & Steve, yeh praps I should have just tried add/remove. Anyway it's not causing a problem. Are the Wanadoo and AOL etc etc, just a case of deleting the folders? (they don't appear in add remove)

On a different matter and not knowing a lot about DVD creating, Is there a way of dumping VHS onto DVD via LT & other hardware?

    Many thanks all.

For Wanadoo & AOL, you can just delete the folders.

As for copying VHS to DVD, you'll need additional hardware like this :

Shop around though, you may find cheaper on eBuyer or Dabs.com.
