As for copying VHS to DVD, you'll need additional hardware like this :

Shop around though, you may find cheaper on eBuyer or Dabs.com.

And there was me looking for all sorts of uninstall options.
Any more idiot proof advise on removing the crap before I get started is welcome.
My attempts to back up the system files as advised in manual (how crap is the manual?) to DVD was thwarted last night, because it said not to use DVD-RW but to use DVD-R. (Naturally I won't be deleting is off the hard drive afterwards;))The MSE Dictionary

I think it says not to use RW dvds to avoid the possibility of you accidentally "cleaning" the dvd later on. The drive with this laptop is a dual layer dvd rw, which means it will use any dvds (dvd-r, dvd+r, dvdrw). You are better off using DVD-R for this, though. You can get 100 DVD-Rs from the likes of big pockets for around the £16 mark (plus postage).

I use tuff discs, as they are hard wearing (have a little'n running around who likes to scratch things!). You can get cheaper, but you get what you pay for.In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?

The manual was not specific with regard to why DVD-RW were not to be used, however I had thought that might be the reason.
For the limited amount of DVD-R's I anticipate getting through, I'll be following your advise and going for quality over quantity. The MSE Dictionary

Hmm...I've got the same problem with this laptop as I had with the one I returned yesterday. Since installing my wifi card, it keeps randomly trying to reboot (and failing) until I take the wifi card out. I couldn't get the damn thing to boot up windows just now!! Oddly enough, it ran fine with the wifi card in last night, but today's been a nightmare. Looks like a compatibility problem to me - damn d-link rubbish! It runs fine without it.
EDIT: most odd. It's intermittent. Any ideas? It's running fine with my wifi card right now. It makes a strange noise when it turns off, though - sounds like a short circuit noise. It doesn't shut down properly, the damn thing just goes off!In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?

If you aren't 110% sure what you are doing, a fresh install would be a bad idea - if anything goes wrong, and you don't know how to fix it, then you may end up having to pay out good money to a PC technician to get it put right. There's really no need to do a fresh install unless you already have problems.

Just a thought... did you install a WiFi aerial in the case? If so, then it's possible that this could be shorting out against another component.
