By the way, does anyone else's laptop beep when you turn it on? (i've disabled the low battery warning sound, so it's not that!).
In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?
It's time to make that change.

Yes - the laptop checks if there is a bootable disk in the DVD drive. If there isn't, then it beeps and boots from the hard drive. I think you can turn off the DVD check in the BIOS, I'm just about to reboot and try it.

Also, to get rid of the PB toolbar on IE, just right click on the toolbars and untick the ones you don't want.

And to get rid of the horrible PURPLE colour scheme on IE, go here :

and download the remover. Run it and restart IE, and it will be sorted. If you decide you want it back, run it again.

Amit, it doesn't have built in WLAN, so you'd either have to use your modem (with modem cable), plugged into the phone socket, or buy a wireless network card for the lappy. Most hotels allow internet access through a phone socket in the room, but it costs a lot of money. If you go via the phone socket, you'll still need an ISP. If, when using a wireless card, you're in a Wifi hotspot, you can set your lappy to automatically search for and connect to the net through the open network.

The other alternative is to fit an internal WLAN. I think someone has already posted on this thread about where to buy a cheap internal WLAN card.

I've already changed the boot up sequence, as it was set to boot from the dvd drive first, which kept pulling up a lovely "nothing detected in drive" error. It booted from the HDD after that, but it was annoying, so I changed it to boot from HDD first.

How do I get rid of all that muck on the damn thing? Seems to be lots of desktop short cuts to various web pages, as well as AOHELL software and wanadoo.

Yep, I use Firefox for 99% of my browsing too...but unfortunately some sites still don't like it... for example the National Lottery site. If it wasn't for them, I'd never have to open IE. Grrrr!
