OF COURSE YOU DO NEED ANTIVIRUS AND FIREWALL SOFTWARE but I suggest you use a different brand, try Mcafee.

Please note that when you run the Packard Bell utilty 'Smart Restore' after getting rid of Norton it will throw up an error because it cant find the norton files. Just click ignore and it works fine.

    Regards

    Rob
Mcafee cost me a new hard drive too - avoid at ALL cost.. it actually replicated a virus in itself and screwed up big style..

Use zone alarm and avast - both free (or AVG but that's not as easy to use as avast)
  • just wondering if this laptop is already protectedby windows service pack 2 for the firewall side at least

I ordered mine on-line and didn't get a print out (computer messed up) but the Southampton branch called to confirm my order and when i said that i did not have the print out or a reference number they said it was fine and they would still reserve it for me to collect (which i did last night). So try and get put throught to the branch you ordered from and use your name and phone number.

    Worth a try??

125 mile round trip (closest store that had any left at time, but as I needed a new one anyway, seemed worthwhile ) - ended in a 50 minure arguement in store

I called last night to confirm the order was still valid

Sales guy was nice but could not get order up on screen- even though it was packaged ready with invoice with my name "in the cage" plus many more at full price in stock

He called floor manager over to help-

His reply - it's been cancelled on system and said

    1. I must be later than 24 hrs after order
    - I was not any anyway it says collect before closing on Thursday

    2. I must have cancelled it
    - Yeah I have a habit of bagging a great deal, driving 125 mile round trop for something I had cancelled

I told him to call the helpline- and not to worry- no rush, so long as I got it in the end ( fancied nipping for a bite to eat anyway)- but he said that was not neccesarily going to happen [ enter red flag to bull]

He was about to take away my print out ( even though his own had all the same details) , and got upset when I said I wanted to keep it- all got a bit heated

Transpires he knew he had to sell at that price, but if he authorised it it, the loss was out of his "target" so had to get HO to reinput it ( no one knows why its was cancelled in first place)

No yet out of box - but looks like a bargain! cheers

( on a side issue I do worry about DSG - seems discounting heavily on a number of items- are they having trouble?)

  • payless - did the invoice have the discounted price on it? I've got to go to collect mine tonight, and I've a feeling I might have similar problems (and I haven't got a printout, just a ref number). I haven't had a call from the branch either.

Were Head Office able to confirm your transaction?, as I phoned the helpdesk last night, and the guy said he couldn't get through to the branch, and all he could tell me was it looked like a legit reference number.

well I went armed with a phone bill, and after 90 mins came away with the laptop, they found the transaction then lost it as someone deleted it, they had to manually alter the price in the end. their system should be able to find you by name as a 'parked transaction'

Picked mine up at lunchtime from PC World in Crawley. The salesman was a bit unsure initially and went off to find his boss - came back after 10 mins with his boss and the laptop, and they took me over to one of the store's computer terminals. He logged in, went into the "collect @ store" option, it asked for the reference number. He typed it in and up popped my name, phone number, the laptop details and the £289.99 price :D

They were both very surprised, and agreed that it was a bloody good deal!

Scrooge - yes their "invoice/ advice note " had my name and the £289.99 price on it
plus my reference number and another no.

my reference showed up as nothing on computer
the other no. came up at £579.99

HO had to reinput the deal.

anyway my BB connection died last night - so need to sort that out now!
