Lellie, PMed you about changing the ram allocation on the shared graphics, as I've no idea how to do it. :(

i think i jumped the gun with this a bit, there aren't any settings in the bios to change this (there are on most desktops with onboard graphics) i'll have a look see what i can find out though (the laptop is about 80 miles away with my girlfriend at the moment)

(btw, it's not lellie posting all this, it's "trem" her bf, who's too lazy to sign into his own account)

is any one else in this situation ie having the dell d3000 and and the laptop.

I've got a Dell 4600 Dimension (2.6Ghz P4, got from Dell outlet for very little cash) upgraded to the hilt, a Dell 1100 Inspiron (another cheap dell outlet purchase), a Targa AMD 2000XP upgraded and now this laptop. If you can't choose, keep'em all ;)

The Targa's now my 9 year old's pc, the Dell Inspiron is being sold (for more than I paid for the PB), my 4600 is my main desktop PC which I use all the time - huge amounts of HDD, RAM and everything else, so does exactly what I want it to do. The new PB lappy is for my OH - all the pcs/laptops are networked, sharing my ADSL connection which I will soon be upgrading from 1 to 4mb.
In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?
It's time to make that change.

hehe damn that boy stealing my account..

anyway yeah - I didn't check but assumed you'd be able to change it in the BIOS as with most computers but packard bell disabling anything useful as they design computers for morons means it's been taken out. damn their hides. I wish they thought about more advanced users.. has been taking me ages to get this computer in a useable state.. getting rid of norton and setting things up nicely.

Ah well.....448MB is still better than 192MB! ;) Going to carry on ripping the cr... out of the PB tomorrow, as I'm off to bed now. I'll probably make the recovery disc tomorrow, then delete that nasty partition on the HDD. Oh, and not to forget to put firefox on there and get rid of that nasty PB theme.

if you unscrew the panel on the back, the bigger of the two, you'll see the 2 ram slots, the mini pci slot and the processor heatsink, it's as easy as undoing 6 screws, popping off this panel, putting the card in, and screwing it back down.

you can get a mini pci wireless card from ebuyer.

Hi Lellie, have you actually bought and fitted this to the PB? Is it preferable to using a PC card, what are the advantages etc?

Also, it would be great if someone could post the steps they used to get rid of all the unwanted stuff on the PB. I've seen some advice in this thread but it would be really useful to computer inadequates like me to have it pulled together.

Heh - I did mine before even switching it on! (Upgraded the RAM) I think most manufacturers consider normal upgrades (simple ones) are ok, as they don't need lots of expertise. It really is the case of unscrewing the little cover and sticking in your RAM/PCI card, then putting the cover back on.

Hmm, what specific RAM module do I need to order from eBuyer?

I'd like to get this done too!
