Agreed, I'm in exactly the same position hence my earlier questions about the mini PCI card versus the PC card version. Some people on here have already explained how to get rid of Norton and I'm sure we could swap experiences with other aspects of the laptop. Question would be where to set up the discussion....Named after my cat, picture coming shortly0 -
I thought a thread in Techie Stuff would work?

Tojo, I think the ram is only available in store for that price. I bought mine when I went to pick my laptop up - there was a huge sign over the display stating that it was half price. In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?
It's time to make that change.

Hmm, I'm a little confused, however this is becoming a regular occurance!
I grabbed some of the PNY RAM, installed it and started the lappy up.
Went to Control Panel, System, then to the General tab to check the RAM had been recognised. Hooraay! It had, however I did notice that the process was listed as being a Sempron 2600+, 801mhz.
Should this be? Could someone else check in there to see whether theirs states the same or not?
Thanks lots0 -

gibbajabba wrote:Yep mine is the same 801mhz,amd processor names are confusing, dont know why they do this.
But shouldn't it say 1600mhz? Or 1.6ghz?
On this desktop I'm using now, it has a 2800+ Athlon, and is shown as being 2.02ghz.
Anyone think that perhaps the laptops are not set up properly?
If so, I've had a look through the BIOS, and there's nothing to even suggest clock speeds and multipliers etc.

Ok, here's why.
It's a MOBILE processor.
What this means is that it is a processor designed for laptops - it will run at 1.6GHz (which is the max speed of the Sempron 2600+) but only when needed. The rest of the time it will run at a slower speed (in this case 50% slower, i.e. 800MHz) to conserve battery power.
Hope this helps!

Certainly does.
Itelligence eh? One day I'll get some.
It's my first outing with a portable computer, so it's another learning area really.
I'll get ther....patience, patience.

I also should mention that AMD processors, if you are unfamiliar with them, have a slightly confusing naming convention. The name is not related to the clock speed of the chip, but to it's overall performance when measured against an Intel processor.
So for example :
A 2.0GHz Pentium 4 is roughly equivalent in speed to an AMD Athlon XP2000 (but the Athlon runs at 1.67GHz).
A 2.8GHz Celeron is roughly equivalent in speed to an AMD Sempron 2800+ (but the Sempron runs at 1.6GHz).
Remember, that a PC's speed cannot be reliably measured just by the clock speed of the processor - a lot of other factors need to be taken into account, such as the amount of cache memory on the chip, etc.
Hope this helps.
