I'm sure it will be less painful than going from the Nokia to the iphone (although I am semi confused as to why you would want another android handset with all their shortcomings :o)

What shortcomings? I was just trying to see if there was a way to make the upgrade path as painless as possible! It seems there isn't.

EDIT - Guilty as charged with the Sony Xperia S purchase just made... LOL

Yeah, just from one iOS device to another. That's why I had assumed one Android device to another would also be possible, but that's not the case it seems

You are expecting the impossible, all android devices are different, some are touchscreen, some have buttons, etc.

Its that, IMO, that makes Android much much better because it gives you the choice of handset that suits you, there are apps that can backup and restore all your apps (the aptly named "App backup and restore" ;)) and you can sync your contacts and calender through google (Settings>Accounts and Sync>Manage accounts)

As someone else said, things like ringtones and settings are likely to be device specific so they will need to be set up.

Is it really that much of a pain? When I get a new phone its one of the parts I like most as its part of how you learn to use it. If you really consider it that much of a pain why change phones?
    Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently! ;)

 Have you not read thegoodman's posts?
In fairness you have asked the right questions in the right manner, as the data transfers are going to affect different users in different ways.

But not quite as restricted as the iPhone because you can transfer stuff from one device to another (manufacturer)

I guess every plus has a corresponding minus!

I wouldn't say setting up the phone's basics is very fun; exploring the new functionality and features is, but getting all of your settings/preferences/data over is fairly tedious by my measure and the more automated that is, the better!

Other than the apps, I don't think there's anything else you can't transfer manually if you really could be bothered.

I'm not sure what you mean by data, Music etc? if so you can just put it on the memory card and put the memory card in the new phone?

    Something else iPhones cant do..

I don't think the Sony Xperia S has a memory card slot?

...just checked, no it doesn't, so that's not even an option!

Also, I'm referring to app data etc. Saves/settings/preferences within apps.
