Good finds, lisakay! I'm reeling after a trip to a nearby town where there are 8 charity shops. I think they're colluding... I'm usually looking for the £1 rail to stock up on cotton shirts, pyjamas etc. to cut up for quilting, but not one shop had one out. And there were virtually no shirts at all under £5, winter coats were anywhere from £30-£50 and in one, there was a fairly tatty Barbour jacket for £75! Admittedly it did still have its zip-out liner, but the zip was broken & gappy halfway up one side. And yes, Barbours aren't meant to look spotless, but still - £75? I wonder if it will sell? And there was one shop bedecked with wedding dresses at anything from £50 to £200; oddly the £50 one was by far the nicest, best-made & most stylish, although relatively plain, and the £200 one looked like a wedding cake plastered with glitter.
This particular town has been very, very depressed until a little Olympic flurry of excitement recently, but now there's nothing at all hopeful on the horizon for it. Several local businesses went under during the Games, but the charity shops, despite what seem to me to be outrageous prices, were mobbed. Presumably people there are happy to pay £6 for an Atmosphere t-shirt, but that doesn't seem like much of a bargain to me!
Did find some vintage curtains I was pleased to see (had ones in the same fabric in my bedroom when I was a teenager) but they set me back £15 even though they're unlined & not exactly pristine. But as I have other items in that fabric & some plans for them, I coughed up, even at the risk of encouraging them to continue to charge too much.Angie - GC Aug25: £374.16/£550 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0 -
Thriftwizard: I agree that some of the chazzers are getting a bit greedy. It's all donated stuff after all..but they seem to have put the prices up because they know people are shopping more in the CS's. I always check labels carefully, not that I'm a label snob, but don't want to pay over the odds for a Primarni Tshirt!
I did get a nice top yesterday, new with tags, M&S. It was £4.99 from Oxfam, not cheap as such but still a bargain because I so needed a new one.Normal people worry me.0 -
I finally got myself a coat yesterday :j (been after one for ages but never anything in my size) a Next long wool blend one for £3.
I agree about some charity shops getting expensive, Shelter in our town is the most expensive with items being £4-£5 on average and coats I've seen between £10-£30 whereas Barnardos everything is £1.99.0 -
I got a tomy aqua draw deluxe for £2 out of a charity shop today. Was really pleased with this as the new ones were about £20 when I looked online. My mom also got a brand new M&S top for £3.95 and it still had tags attached.
A good trip for both of us0 -
Today I bought...
7 books - one being the Covent Garden Soup cook book for 50p. No book cost more than 1 pound. Lots of chick lit for the cold evenings.
Two red heart shape side plates - they seem to be Flora give away ones. They go so well with my dinner set which is covered in hearts :-) 70p each from the Cancer Research Discount Shop.
In this discount shop I also bought a cable knitted teal jumper dress from M&S for £3. Slightly bobbling but looks lovely on.
Finally, again in the same store, I found three Disney Pins for 50p each. We collect these and so I was very excited to find them. They retail for around 6 to 8 quid each normally. These three come from Disneyland Paris and are from 2003. One of Cleo and one Gipetto from Pinoccio and one of Piglet. Best charity find to date :-)0 -

An old, boxed Lego set
:D.
After putting the parts into one of our (themed:o storage boxes ) I was about to cram the box into the recycling when something made me look it up on Bricklink.
Turns out it's worth a bit :j so it's on ebay atm and fetching over £3. :rotfl:They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.0 -
Gorgeous warm knee-length Per Una hooded winter coat, looks like new, £12.95 in Cancer Research Shop. Exactly what I was wanting, as I had only just realised that all my presentable winter coats are longish jacket length, but this will keep my bum warm too
. Great for waiting on chilly railway platform seating, which is always icy cold.
Bonus is that the arms are exactly the right length for me. I usually find they are too long. Oh and bonus #2... with the hood up I can still see where I'm going. Some hoods fall down over my face and make crossing the road somewhat challenging!
I nearly put it back as it was a Large, and I'm more of a Medium, but the top half fitted fine, and I found draw cords at the waist and hem so I could make it more fitted.I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe
