Interesting! According to the GOV.UK website....

'Charities and community amateur sports clubs can apply for charitable rate relief of up to 80% if a property is used for charitable purposes.'

and according to the Charity Finance Group.....

'At present charities occupying commercial property are entitled to relief on business rates, provided it is used wholly or mainly for charitable purposes. Charities are eligible for 80% mandatory relief, which local (billing) authorities can choose to top up by an additional 20%.'

We have lost 3 charity shops here over the last year or so.

I wonder if it could be a vicious circle where a charity charges too much for stuff so people don't go in anymore so they put the prices up.....
We had 2 Hospice shops (same charity) in our small village & they closed one. But that sold stuff very cheap. Books 25p or 5 for £1. The remaining shop charges 75p or £1 per book.

Something I've had on the 'want' list for years is an Aerobie Aeropress coffee maker.

They sell for about £25 new and £15+ secondhand. I don't like either of those prices. The waiting has finally paid off as I spotted a brand-new-in-box one in Age Concern for £8.99. Still not exactly cheap but better than £25.

I was browsing a local Sue Ryder and there was a Cath Kidston changing bag for an eye-watering £50.00! Not sure how much they are new?

    £60 upwards...

I also have a shop near me charging 25p each book or 5 for £1. The chap there told me that they're going to be increasing their prices because so many people have said they are happy to donate household goods but don't like their books being sold so cheap so take them elsewhere. I must admit, I've seen virtually brand-new hardbacks there.

One upon a time, the shop had problems with finding space for books because they used to get so many, now they receive fewer, they can use that space for more profitable goods.

They're not sure yet how much more they will charge but they're hoping it will help them have more books handed in.

Anyway, in another shop I got a lovely lightweight cotton lawn top. It's a German make I've never heard of & it cost £4.50. It looks hideous on me but it's easily the most comfortable thing I've ever worn, so I use it as a pyjama top :D If only they had a couple more!

My one and only trip round the charity shops this week ended up with me acquiring two more dresses, An M & S, jersey maxi in a black orange and turquoise geometric pattern, brand new, £4. (What is it about sunshine that makes me buy bright colours?:o). Also from M & S a knee length jersey dress with a draped neckline in a more discreet navy and mushroom pattern, also £4. :)

Not a CS find - I took a couple of electrical items to the amenity tip and decided to look in the shed where they sell usable items. Found a lovely large vase for my sitting room - about 2ft tall for £2! Well pleased :)

A pair of casual cream slip on shoes for £1.
They are "Avenue" - an Aldi brand - so probably didn't cost loads to start with but a pair of shoes for a pound :money::j
