Haven't posted for quite some time, as my local cheap as cheap as chips charity shop closed and I couldn't bear to pay the prices on the high street! But, hooray, another local one has opened, the nomad trust - for homeless people. I had a good clear out and dropped off a couple of bags, the shop was fairly empty, but it hadn't been open long. I got a pair of monsoon trousers, perfect for wo k, for £2.50
Popped in again yesterday on my way to work, went to try a skirt on, and as I went to the changing room, spotted some green strappy high heel shoes... They were irregular choice shoes, my favourite brand! Never worn, the image on the sole completely intact and my size, £4 I snatched them up and hung onto them! These shoes generally retail for £60 +++
Looking forward to more bargains at this shop, they seem to be doing fairly well so far, so hope they remain in this spot.

Just a note for anyone who is unsure about buying shoes if they don't look brand new. I put dustbin powder in them and leave them overnight JIC! It's the type of powder you can use in animal cages too so should make sure they're 'fresh'
Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle

Why am I telling you this?
On paying I complimented the very friendly volunteer on having a great charity shop. Her reply was quite sad. The shop is closing in two weeks to be refurbished. No longer will it be a shop selling everything that is donated and saleable. In the words of the volunteer...no longer the place for 'rooting'.
The volunteer then said that she is finishing as she likes the shop as it is and she isn't the only one doing this.

This is so sad. I wonder whether the 'refurb' will generate more money for the cause.

Depend if the prices shoot up too high, and if it looks too much like a boutique. Whilst that might work in cities, it might be too much for your everyday town?

The AgeUK in our town has just had a subtle refurb. Tbh, I don't really know what has changed much? Apart from their are a few more manequins and manequin bodies hanging on the walls, so it looks abit posher and things are presented better. The bric-à-brac wall is just exactly the same though.

In this shop they have dresses for £7/8 upwards, (they do still have cheaper ones and £1 rail), whereas in the AgeUK shops in other nearby towns they're selling ALL ladies clothes for £1.

Has anyone else noticed when they're doing a "tour" of all the towns charity shops that other people are too? :p The same person you see in one shop will too be going shop to shop....it's like a new sport lol! :rotfl:

    Definitely! :D

I notice it much more when they are after books however. Mainly because they stand in front of me in a world of their own.

:rotfl: Books are one thing I never really look at, unless it's cook books!

I was in the local Hospice shop today, and got a BNWT Rocha by John Rocha red summer dress for £5.95 (which I thought was a good price, and it's my fave charity), and then I got to the till and the woman said it was BOGOHP, so I went back to the dresses and started flicking through them as I was in abit of a rush. Another woman started to flick through them from the other side, then huffed and puffed abit, and passive aggressively said to the young girl with her "come on, we'll go and look up that end of the shop" whilst shooting me a glance as if I was in her way! It's getting to be a competitive sport I tell ya! :rotfl:

The other dress I got was a Monsoon black & cream dress for £6.95, and so I got the first one half price.

In another shop I got DH a pair of khaki shorts for £3, a pair of denim linen trousers from Next off the £1 rail, and then in another shop I got a Dorothy Perkins mint pinstripe sleeveless blouse off the £1 rail too.

Three pairs of jeans (one from Next) several tops/shirts, a Per Una skirt (tags still on) all at £1 each. Sadly the shop is closing down due to redevelopment but, to be honest, it was a shop I rarely shopped in before because the stuff was so overpriced!
    Looking ahead

I do not go to Charity Shops anymore, they are just taking the P with the prices they are charging for second hand tat that was not only given to them but gift aided too.

I have donated thousands of pounds to them over the years, now I would rather give things away on FreeCycle.

There are two local to me and they both play the same game, especially on clothes.

If anyone can recommend a particular brand of shop that are still realistic in their pricing.

Local independents or shops that aren't anywhere near a major high street are usually much cheaper. If you're in Scotland, CLAN charity shops are reasonable. In Aberdeen there is the Sailor's Society, Chest, Heart & Stroke, two CLAN ones and Bethany Trust.
