Haha Polly - you know all about knits then - Crimplene etal!!! Hope you didn't mind me saying as I've just shortened a Jersey maxi dress for a friend. So glad it was useful to you Charlie's Aunt .
Aaaaargh! Crimplene! And it's made a comeback!
And don't get me started on crepe.

Was shopping with a friend who's also a long-time sewer and we were horrified to see dresses made of crimplene but had a good laugh about the 'old days'.

We always feel at fabric and scrunch it up to see what it will wear like. I bet you do the same. :)

I actually made my own wedding dress (first time around), not traditional, just a very pretty dress in lovely fabric that I accessorised with shoes, bag and floppy hat complete with fake flowers (1974) and made my 2 bridesmaid dresses (8 year olds).

I didn't mind your tip at all, I meant to say that I was sure that other posters will find it useful.

Polly - I always feel the fabric a squeeze it in my hand to see how much it creases (can't stand linen - always looks like a dishrag to me!) I made my wedding dress in '74 too (2nd time round & still got him ;) ) it had a peplum top with tiny buttons down the front and a full length 8 gored skirt - accessorised with a flower trimmed floppy hat! No bridesmaids as there were only 6 of us! Those were the days ;)
Crimplene making a comeback is enough to make you run screaming to the hills lol!!
Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle

I just knew you would do that. :D

Apologies for turning this into a sewing-fest thread. :o

Some coincidences between us there, silvasava.

Still nothing remotely approaching bargains in the CS here. Think I'll give them a miss for a few weeks, I've got plenty of summer clothes and don't really NEED anything at all anyway. Just going to be a money saving :A and enjoy my past bargains instead :)

No cs bargains for me but I am having a wardrobe clear out and as my wardrobe is mostly charity shop bargains I'm very pleased with my current selling total of £95 and more things to sell.
During the process two of my dds have also "shopped" from my discarded items and been very impressed by my label heavy wardrobe

VfM - do you read all the books you buy as quickly as you buy more? Where do you keep them all? Do you donate them back when you have read them?

I imagine your home being like a college library, surrounded with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, and a portable ladder to reach them all! :rotfl:
I wish! I had started the year intending to read one a week, but I have slipped into my old habits - multiple books on the go :o

You're right, my home fills up with books so fast I'm struggling to find room for more bookcases. There must be several hundred books in total, perhaps nearing 1,000? Weird considering I usually don't give 2 hoots for material stuff. The ones I find are all fascinating subject matter, its just a pity that I don't have the time to just sit and read and drink coffee all day...that would be my fantasy life!

A couple of quotes I stand by:

A random visit to the Sue Ryder shop this morning and was happy to get a large mirror framed with a lovely pine frame for £3
It has a few minor scratches but wax and wire wool will have it looking like new by tonight and it will be a welcome replacement for the gilt framed 70's horror that we inherited from OH's grandparents which has seen better days

Is it a special kind of jug you're after? Surely it would just be as cheap to buy one from somewhere like Home bargains, or even a Supermarket? I've seen them as little as £3 I think.

I'm trying to have a buy-nothing-new year combined with trying to go as plastic-free as possible :) and prefer the more vintage styles that CS get . . . . and the thrill of the chase!
