  • I agree sometimes primark items are more in the charity shops than they are new

Just to add to my previous post, if there are any Charity shop managers, or staff involved with pricing reading this thread could you please note the comments about over pricing of lower price high street items. Why would anyone want to pay almost as much and in some cases more than what the item sells for brand new instore.

I quite often see things that I've recently spotted in Poundland (for £1!) priced at £1.50 or £2.00 in a c/shop. It must be tricky for the staff, as the Pound shops sell so much these days that they're not to know what came from them.

I was caught out myself once, buying a netbook cooler (fan that you stand your netbook on) for £5, then finding out they had been £1 in Poundland not long before. (It didn't last long before going pffttt .)
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

Visited Clevedon at the weekend and found some plumb curtains, fully lined in a lovely embossed spring green.

Just what I had been looking for for my large lounge window. All for the princely sum of £9.95

    Now that's what I call a bargain

A lovely backdrop to my tête-à-tête daffodils that have opened up today on the windowsill

Would be nice but seems to be a slow process. Just back from a weekend in Aberdeen. Used Office shoes in Home Start charity shop £10.00. New shoes in Office sale were starting from £9.00. New silver clutch bag in Shoe Express sale £3.49 - £3.89, used tatty one in Sailors Society £5.00.

Clothes in Aberdeen charity shops are horrendously overpriced. Second hand dresses often start at £15+!!!

Having said that, I have had some bargains from a few.

In the Sailors Soc shop on Schoolhill I got a canvas orange elephants print for £4 (much prettier than it sounds) and an original watercolour of Aberdeen university by a local artist complete with a wooden frame (about 60cm x 100cm) for £5! The frame was a bit dated but it had been professionally mounted already so I bought a cheap can of black gloss spray paint and voila! Original paintings like that sell for £hundreds in the art gallery next door.

If you're looking to splash out on a once-in-a-lifetime painting, local Aberdeenshire artist Rodney Peace is amazing. I commissioned an oil painting of a snow leopard as a present for my OH a few years ago (he's a zoologist with a thing for big cats) and it's like a photograph. It cost £200 but it's honestly one of the most beautifully crafted paintings I've ever seen. The eyes are piercing and the attention to detail of the fur is just incredible.

The Clan shops are also excellent for bargains. I've had curtains, sheets and other homewares for next to nothing.

Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland shops are good for pretty vintage finds and, whilst not the cheapest, certainly beat Oxfam and BHF who charge silly money for old rubbish.

I still can't get over my £350 like-new red and white ski jacket for £5 that I found in Edinburgh a few weeks ago, I'm still smiling about it!

Not a bargain as I did not buy it...

Usborne kids snap cards £4 used & in a scruffy box...on Am*zon...it's £4.77 brand new....

My local town has umpteen charity shops & several of them are local hospices etc so not "chain" charity shops. This particular independent one used to be just like a rummage sale with a few handy bits buried under the junk. It's had a complete makeover, loads less stock, no sign of previous volunteers & prices beyond belief.

I actually queried it (thinking it was supposed to be 40p) but no, a disinterested volunteer stated that was the pricing policy & it was £4.

Won't be going back in a hurry!

  • Have been really lucky and had a few great finds in various CS's over the last couple of weeks.

I was so pleased to find myself a pair of Van Dal black leather ankle boots, totally brand new only £3 (currently retail for £100).

    Next top £1.50

Principles long warm winter skirt £1 on the sale rail (thinking ahead!)

Unusually found some great clothes, all as new, for my 5 yr old boys -
    3 shirts (2 Next, 1 TU) 50p each
    2 T-shirts (Next & TU again) 25p each
    2 pairs jeans (Next & TU again) 75p & 50p

    Gibsons jigsaw like new 50p

Usborne book of castles with loads of lift up flaps and really interesting details of castle types and life - £1 brilliant condition.

'How to be a Knight' book, again loads of interesting facts and lift up bits it's like new was just 50p (selling on amaz for £12 at the mo!) DSs have pored over it.

The boys now ask on the way home from school if I have found any bargains today!

I bought a lovely bright blue silk Zara top for £4.50
It's got 3/4 length sleeves and a drawstring was it, it's quite loose and floaty. Covers me non existent bum.
The thing is, I bought it for the colour! now I don't know what to wear it with besides white linen trousers which aren't really"me" any ideas , folks?
    It's electric blue.
