  • The liability will close when she turns 19...however the last public consultation that I read said that they are going to bring the definition f a child in line with child benefit, which can be paid up until the 20th birthday, depending on full-time education.

However, as you keep saying, that is NOT happening yet, it is not law and you or anyone else doesn't know when it will be implemented...

What a way to make someone feel better by suggesting another year of paying... :T

Agreed, but just wanted to make others aware, perhaps people who have children aged 17 or so, that 19 won't always be the cut-off point that it has been previously.

I think it will be interesting to see how quickly it is challenged in Europe as to the legality of it being possible for a child to be upto 20..!

I personally believe that it is ridiculous... How can you have different laws for different things ascertaining what a child is, a child is a child or it isn't...! If you can be a child at nearly 20 then you should not be able to marry, vote, drink, drive or a multitude of other things... If you are an adult, then you are old enough to take care of yourself...!

Unless in education upto the school year ending the year of your 18t b/day...! Anything else is a crock of sh*t...

    Just saying... ;)
  • There are already discrepancies in the UK though - you can sign up to be a soldier and kill people at 16, yet aren't old enough to drink...

My point exactly, Europe does not have such a high age. I believe from quick looks most of Europe stops at 18. Making it more of a gap and possible to challenge, meaning that if a european court rules it could in fact be brought down...

Just curious to see where this takes people and how quickly it will be challenged...

Well watch this space, looks at though they're upping the cut-off point before the end of the year...

would that mean, that although the qualifying "child" turns 19 in less than four weeks, would her mum be able to put in another claim from the date it changes till next november?
