I bought a Lidl Golden Delicious apple tree in 2007, planted in large tub & fruited well, now looking forward to this years crop, I can see the fruit buds there already

I,m looking at gooseberry this time, I have one but it is an unknown seedling, so a named one will do fine

  • Farway - I'm glad your apple tree fruited well in a tub, as this is what I am planning to do with mine - I don't want to plant it direct as my garden isn't big enough to let it grow full-size. I think I will try the plum tree aswell?

Nutty, the plum may be a bit trickier, it does not say what the rootstock is, and plums can be very vigorous, but still worth a try I reckon. It never said rootstock on aple either, so I chanced it

I was tempted to try cherry in a tub, but they have same vigour probs as plums, but you never know, I could be enticed

Will apple trees do well in a pot then? I saw some outside Woolworths today and it got me wondering. I'm renting at the moment so don't want to plant an orchard :rotfl:but would quite like some home grown apples :)
  • Ooh, great, I'm thinking about getting some raspberry canes, they won't fruit till next year though will they?
A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.

They will, but you need a very big pot, and better if they are on a dwarfing rootstock. be aware that the pot & soil / compost will be very heavy, & it will need to be to stop tree blowing over

Would a bucket be OK? They have them for £1 each in focus and they look sturdy, and I imagine they would be pretty heavy when filled!
  • I have an old water butt which has been sawn in half - last year I did the potatoes in it, but I think I will cover the outside with some of that reed screening and put the trees in there - should be plenty of room for them for a couple of years until I move to my 'forever house' and they can be planted direct into the ground. Was going to use them for carrotts, but I think this is a better idea.

I honestly don't think so, maybe for a year but there just would not be enough room for roots, and I thnk it would also topple over as it is tapered

Nutty's old water butt sounds much larger & more suitable
