  • I think what Enfieldian meant was that there is no direct mention of goods having to last a reasonable time in the SOGA .

It doesn't give any timescale, it simply states that goods must be of a satisfactory quality (which includse durability, fitness for purpose, appearance and safety) and these criteria are determined by what would be assumedto be satisfactory by a reasonable person.

Which paraphrased is pretty much what I said, no?

I don't think anyone on this site in their right mind would try to argue that the SOGA did not give protection to consumers for products that were not of reasonable quality (which as you say includes durability, fitness for purpose, appearance and safety). Some of us just can't be arsed to find and quote directly which I'm sure can be forgiven as long as the general message is correct, which I think we both agree mine was.

Sometimes I think some people forget that this forum is meant to help and support people. Not somewhere to come and argue the toss over things like punctuation and the minute detail being brought up here. Some people can be real jobsworths when put behind a keyboard.

I guess I just wish people were a little more helpful and actually had a point before letting loose.

I wish you actually had a point to be honest...and I'm not guessing.

I would expect such a thing to last at least until the next iteration is released.

Crikey.........that would be about 6 months on Apple products
  • Thanks for all the replies.

Seems my dilemma has stirred up something!!! hahaha

First off.. GAME say in ''THEIR opinion'' the console should last 3 yrs & that is reasonable. If they're allowed to have an opinion on what is reasonable, then so can I surely?

I think the PS3 should last until the next generation comes out & should in all honesty keep going after it.

I had a PS1 that survived well past the PS2 coming out & so on. I recently got rid of my SNES, that thing was about 19yrs old.

Considering the cost of the PS3 was (& still is at launch) higher than any other console out there, I would expect the best components available. The issue is with the non lead solder (thanks EU directives/laws & all the other crap they throw at us) which changed in 2006. Prior to this lead solder was allowed & this did not crumble after heating/cooling/heating etc over any given period of time, so I have since found out.

I have spoken to GAME who were completely unhelpful. I will push to see if I can get anything from them at all.

    Who knows?

Next generation release date is irrelevant.

If a ps4 was released 6 months after the ps3 you would still expect the ps3 to last longer than 6 months.

If the ps4 was released 30 years after the ps3 it would be unreasonable to expect the ps3 to last 30 years.

  • All the current generation of video games consoles are unreliable. They are all notorious for "red light of death" and "yellow light of death" issues.

Hardware changes have fixed the issue for the consoles being sold now, but anyone who bought the original versions within a year or two of release has to deal with this problem. Everyone I know who has had a PS3 or Xbox since release has encountered this issue.

It is pretty easy to show that something is not "satisfactory quality" if it is a one-off fault, but much more difficult to show that problems occuring 2 or 3 years down the line are a breach of SOGA as you are essentially arguing that every PS3 is not "satisfactory quality". Doubt you will get much from GAME, they must encounter this issue all the time and probably have a set policy on it.
