I also seem to recall no more than a 12 month warranty.
Long term warranties are a relatively new invention. Back in the 1980's/90's nobody offered long term warranties on anything.
My first car lasted 23 years. I bought it when it was 15 years old. It would still be running today but I drove it into the back of another carThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
A 7 year warranty on a car is very good. You dismiss it like it's nothign special. As Equaliser123 says you would never have got anything like that on a car 10 years ago.
Confidence of the workmanship must be better now than it was then! Simple as that.
I think if you took a cross section of 10 year old cars for sale today many of them would not be very reliable. You obviously will get exceptions but generally!0 -

That's my point. 10 years ago if you looked at a 10 year old car they would be alot more reliable than they a 10 year old car is nowThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I really don't think that is right at all. Reliability is much, much improved.
Used to work for a motor manufacturer and the warranty costs are lower per car each year due largely to improved manufacturing processes and supply chain maintenance.0 -

Because the warranty period is less than this! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Another issue you need to take into consideration was that the older the car, the simpler it is. The simpler it is, the easier it is to keep running in your own garage, therefore creating the illusion the car lasts longer.
It's like trigger's famous saying in only fools where he replaces the head on his broom 8 times and the handle 4 times but he has had the same broom since he started.
Modern complex cars need to be repaired by people that know what they are doing. Just because you can't fix it in your garage doesn't mean it breaks down more!0 -

15 to 20 years ago (which is the period you are talking about), it wasn't uncommon to see cars at the side of the road with steam spewing from them due to overheating or broken pipes. This is something that is hardly encountered nowadays.
The number of broken down cars waiting for roadside assistance also appeared far higher than today.
It was also fairly common for people to have a set of jump leads, a can of WD40 (or similar) and a few other "essentials" (easystart, ignition lead sealer etc) in the boot ready for the cold wet mornings when the car wouldn't start.
I would be hard pushed to try to remember all the times my old cars let me down over the years, but since about 2005 when I started buying modern ones, I've only ever had one problem.0 -
SOGA says that the product should last a reasonable amount of time. I would say 5 and a half years is not a reasonable length of time for a playstation 3. I would expect such a thing to last at least until the next iteration is released.
Hell i still have a Sega Megadrive that works perfectly fine now!!
So, if you don't understand the SOGA then just make up your own then.....?0 -

Please elaborate?
I think my paraphrasing of the law is fairly accurate without quoting it directly I admit.
Enlighten me oh sarcastic overlord! hahaha pathetic0
