My Right PS3

goater78 i disagree that 5 years is a reasonable amoutn of time. Just because we live a throwaway lifestyle where broken products have become the norm does not make it right.
5 years is not a long time for a product such as a playstation. As I explained I have all my old consoles and they all still work, why should a ps3 be any different?
I fear I have misguided you with the comment about the ps4. I see your point and that isn't really what I was getting at. The point I meant to make is that we now know the ps4 is likely going to be released next year and I would expect a ps3 bought on launch day to last that long, if not longer.0 -

Its not 5 years its almost 6 years.
Its not fair to compare technologies. Old consoles were a lot more simple and there was less to go wrong with them. The Sega megadrive ran off a cartridge which is much more hard wearing than a disc. As technology gets more advanced there are more components and so more things can go wrong. In addition I doubt they have been used much in the last few years.
I still have a cricket bat from when I was growing up. Thats over 30 years old. So should everything I buy have a similar lifespan?
I also would dispute that owning an item for almost 6 years and then throwing it away as its broken is a "throwaway lifestyle".This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
A modern cricket bat should yes, absolutely!
Do you think consoles are the only things that have got more complicated? Or do you perhaps think the actual methods of making the systems are the same as they were then or have they also improved? Or that the methods of quality monitoring have also improved along the way? Everything improves along with everything else, you cant say PS3 is more complicated so will break more. My car is much more complicated than a car built in the 80's, but my car now breaks down much less than a car back then wouldhave when new. That is because reliability is a key factor when buying a car so companies have realised this and made them more reliable. Sony on the other hand don't care if their ps3 breaks, you will just buy another one.
The reason the ps3 breaks and the megadrive hasn't is because Sony scrimp more when making the ps3 than SEGA did when making the megadrive.
People are being conditioned to expect things to break as everything does these days. My point is that it's wrong to expect it, or accept it, just because it happens all the time.0 -
no you have 6 years to bring your claim under SOGA to the retailer. The reasonable time is exactly that, the reasonable length of time you can expect the product concerned to last. so a £5 kettle probably won't last longer than a year but a £500 entertainment system you would expect to last significantly longer.
Your comparison needs to be like-for-like. So, say a Value kettle with a top-of-the-range De Longhi kettle.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016

Your example about cars is wrong. Older cars lasted a lot longer than they do these days. New cars have a lot of electronic components so the lifespan of a new car is a lot shorter than a car bought in the early 90's.
So as a matter of interest how many years should a £400 PS3 last? You think 6 years is excessively short?
Your point appears to be that things should last forever......This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

.
Not sure I agree. Cars now come with very long warranties which reflects confidence in the durability. Didn't used to.
Cars used to rust very badly. Don't really see that to the same extent.0 -
Well as ever it is difficult to draw comparisons I accept. It depends If you are syaing lifespan with no remedial or maintenance work, or reliability throughout that lifespan whatever it may be.
I would say a modern car is much more reliable than an older car was when it was new through its lifespan. But perhaps the lifespan is shorter without components ebing replaced or maintained (which is what services are for)
I think a PS3 should last about 8 years0 -

The longest warranty is 7 years? I am talking about cars over 10 years plus.
I believe the modern life expectancy of a car of 12 years? It used to be a lot higher than that! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

May have been an expectancy but certainly no cars I ever had made it to 12 years!
I also seem to recall no more than a 12 month warranty.0
