Yep, just had that happen to me this week, but didn't even get to an interview.
It wasn't just a job where my experiences and skills ticked most of the boxes and you send off an application and hope for the best.... this time I felt I ticked every box. It was like it was a mirror image of the job I had been doing for years.
Sent the application off with a cracking CV, all checked over by a job club guy who visits the local library.
Mentally prepared how the interview would go, made sure I was in a position to really nail it.....
Then "Sorry, you have not been invited to the interview"...WHAT!
Went back to job club guy and the only feasable reason he could think of was that maybe they started to look through the applications, and when they found a handful of applicants they wanted to interview, simply stopped looking at the rest of the applications.
Of course, there could well have been better applicants, and they may well have looked at all the applications, but when the advisor is surprised I don't get an interview, I suppose in one way I am not doing too much wrong.
Just got to keep going and hope to get one of those jobs where I don't feel I have as good a chance of getting.... always prepared for disappointment most times, just hoping for good news that one time!0 -
a lot of companies say that though and if I never got the job I never apply to them again as there is no point in my opinion, even when one told me they would keep me on file if a more senior role came up.
Maybe not the best of advice to follow? Interviewing people for employment isn't a personal vendetta and it is simply foolish to treat it as such. So what if you weren't the perfect candidate or the best interviewee this time? There is always the chance that you will be next time. If you turn your nose up at everyone who has ever refused you a job then sooner or later there won't be anyone left to work for.
Interhacker, I really do feel for you. I work in a field that I adore although it is hard and heartbreaking work with regular "inbetween employments". But it is also very competitive (and small) and when I first started out I had the same experience as you so I know how it feels to not get the job that you can't envisage living without. Don't let this dishearten you. If you want it so much it stands to reason that there will be a lot of other people that feel the same way and will be stiff competition. Just keep at it and don't let a few knockbacks stop you. If you haven't already, ask if you could have some personal feedback from one of the interviewers to see if there is anything you could have done better. If you can do this over the phone then it gives you the chance to ask questions and re-emphasise your commitment. Maybe there is an opportunity coming up around the corner, or maybe it is possible that there are jobs at a lower level that you could get in to and work your way up to being in a better position for the next time. You have nothing to lose by it, and it might help the next time.0 -
The same thing happened to me yesterday. I really wanted the job (had to take a day off work to go to the interview costing me £100 in lost pay+ travel costs) seemed to have a great interview.
The job went to someone who has a tiny bit more experience than me in just one area of the job specification!!!!
To say I'm gutted is an understatement! Drank most of a bottle of red last night and binged on a very large amount of chocolate .... it did help a bit
EDIT
Today I've already found 2 new jobs to apply for0 -

There is every point to apply again.
In 90% of cases you employ the best person/people that you see and so you are really up against the other candidates more than anything else. A different role can be interviewed by a different person who has slightly different priorities and what was an ok answer to the previous interviewer could be an exceptional answer to the next one.
My style of work is not the overly planned/controlled way that most of my peers are. To some this is a concern as thats what they see the purposes of my role in being, for others it is seen as a benefit and the other skills I can bring are the priority.
I had one interview for a role at a company and was declined it. I applied 2 months later for the same role in a different team and not only got the role but also 25% more money than the one I was declined for.
On the flip side, never trust their "we will consider you for future roles". Never known a HR/recruitment team that well organised to do it automatically for all candidates0 -
I once had the same - a company I *really* wanted to work for, I had all the experience, everything looked rosy, 2 interviews, etc - the other guy got the job and I was gutted.
Then I got a call 3 weeks later - the other guy had suddenly quit, it turned out it wasn't his dream employer as it was mine - they got me back in for a quick freshener, and I ended up working there for years.
These things happen, you never can tell what will pan out and how - just remain stoic, keep applying, and keep creating opportunities for the right job to find you!0 -
I applied and attended interviews with the same company on many an occasion. If they are a big company then they have many different departments.0

Why put a link to my profile here?
That isn't feedback. That's standard form. You need to go back and ask nicely for feedback as to why you didn't get the job.If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -

They were probably just quoting your name because they were responding to your question and if they copied it from your profile link so they didn't misspell it then it could have copied the link too.0
