Second Hand car using too much fuel!

  • You have five choices:

    1. Keep the car and suffer the fuel costs.
    2. Take the dealer's offer and take the £1k loss on the chin.
    3. Contact 'We buy and car.com' or similar and see what they will offer.
    4. Trade the car in the another more suitable vehicle.
    5. Try and sell it privately in Autotrader.

I don't think I would trust this particular dealer to supply me with another car. If you buy another vehicle, look at a Ford Mondeo 2.0 diesel estate TDCi which should give you 40mpg +. You could pick one up for £1k and upwards. There are hundreds of dealers out there - you do not need to buy a car just because it was the only estate that particular dealer had in stock.

Thanks for lightening up my lunch break.

This is either a massive wind up, or else you really need to do a 20 second google search before buying a car. Ever.

Even a basic bare bones non WRX Impreza is going to be thirstier than the average by a long way. What on earth did you expect?

Give it back for £1,000 less, have some fun in it and write it off as an expensive test drive. Do your research this time, and by research, I don't mean asking a car salesman for advice, he's trying to sell you a car! I'm not sure if it was mentioned above, but these Subarus also have pretty short service intervals. And if a dealer doesn't have a car you want, goto another dealer!
What's your annual mileage and driving patterns, if it's more than say 12,000 and not all short journeys, look for a diesel like a Focus or Astra estate, Toyota Corolla estate maybe.
Diesel vs petrol. NEITHER are good for short journeys. BOTH use more fuel when the engine is cold. DIESELS generally take longer to warm up. That's reason 1 why they're LESS suitable for short journeys. Reason 2, for modern diesels - remember when you used to see black soot come out the back of them? To stop that, they installed a can in the exhaust where this gets trapped. Like a catalytic converter, when it gets warm enough, it'll burn off at a very high temperature, without you knowing. If you never go on long enough journeys, this will never be able to happen, and it'll clog up.
  • so you bought a subaru 2.0l turbo wrx SW? and your comparing the fuel consumption to a 1.8 naturally asperated engine very non clever!

my mate has the 2.5 wrx, he's lucky to see it do over 14MPG on a short trip. and it been maintained to the hilt and back with major service intervals every 3k miles without timing belt really nice car 06 plate 18k miles.

if it aint quick its shagged!

sorry you purchased a car that will soon shrink your pockets.

How can I check this? the car has 72,000 miles? When do I do the cambelt service and how much is it?

It needs to be done at either 48,000 miles or when the car is five years old. If yours hasn't been done (you can only really check by seeing what receipts youve got for the car) then I'd suggest get it done, and QUICK!

If the cambelt snaps, you'll need a new engine.

Well, I was discussing this with a colleague today, and they said similar to whats been said here, that Imprezas use a lot of fuel. I said I didn't know why because they're not that fast so he suggested we go for a drive at lunchtime. I don't normally drive fast at all but he said to keep it in second and floor the throttle :o I have to say I think its ridiculous that they make cars like that. It's dangerous! So scared to think I've had my DS in the car with me. I'm definately selling it now ,driving it home I felt like I was walking on egg shells!

Don't even want to look at the car now. I'll see if I can sell it myself, if not then i'll have to go back to the dealer.

Who ever told you the proDrive "chip" was for economy was !!!!!!!!ting you. proDrive are the company who make Subarus Rally Cars! the proDrive "chip" is for extra PERFORMANCE, at the EXPENSE of ECONOMY!! It's the sort of thing boy racers add to their Subaru...... If you sell it privately then the proDrive bit is a feature you can make a point of to get interest from some chav.

Alternatively give it back and be grateful you've only lost a grand on it.

What was the budget? You could have had a Mondeo TDCi diesel estate? Go to another dealer if that one doesn't have want you want, 2nd hand cars are plentiful right now, it's a buyers market.

I still can't quite believe this true. Made me have a good laugh this evening though (sorry OP).

Sell it to someone who'll appreciate it. Buy yourself a Dacia Sandera - i think thats much more suited.
