Somebody posted on the board a good while ago with a link to AskAManager who has an interesting site. I came across this this morning, how to write a good cover letter. Maybe it will help?

I had a missed call on mobile and landline, I googled number and it is a job I applied for BUT it is from their office about 35 miles away not any of the local ones :( The advert said a nearer town as well grrr. So if it is an interview it is pretty pointless going as I can't get there. I'll have to wait and see as that might be their head office or where HR are based not where job is.

I'm also feeling rubbish about it all too. I know how you feel I'm starting to get used to not having a job.

Had my first interview since the last one three months ago, that was Monday, waiting to hear. Had an agency phone call straight after the Jubilee, chased them up and either the agent or client is dragging its/their feet getting CVs together for shortlisting, so if they don't call then that's that, I'm not wasting any more time until I hear something.

Thankfully my regular temp stuff is going into the busier summer season so as far as I'm concerned I'd need a decent structured job before I'd give up anything temporary but set and regular. After last March I knew to completely chill out, catch up on sleep post-interview and then get back to the lists. That agency call came from being really mercenary and not re-applying to old jobs rolling around for the 100th time and the CV redesign is clearly paying off if an interview has happened as well.

I've had a pretty low day today, lately it just feels like there is just nothing out there to apply for...I feel like I've totally lost my confidence and self-belief.

Two years ago I took redundancy from a job where I was earning £24k, now I can't even get a minimum wage job :( I'm in my mid 30's and am wondering if I'll ever get a job that pays over 20k again.

Sorry to moan...I know it's not helpful or productive, I just can't moan to my partner today and wanted to get it off my chest.

I'm a similar position, I took redundancy last year and have been working in a low paid (though more than minimum wage) fixed term post since. I have found it very difficult finding anything remotely close to my previous salary to even apply for, let alone get interviews.

However I've had a very interesting week. I had a telephone call about a PA job in a bank on Monday and they said they wanted to invite me to interview...though I've not had an email confirming when yet (so maybe they've changed their mind!). I then had an interview yesterday morning in another organisation and got offered the job that afternoon - it's a permanent position and pays a bit more than my current role, though not as much as I'd like. I have verbally accepted it but it could be a few weeks before all the background stuff is done and a contract can be issued, so I won't be handing in my notice for a while yet.

This is just as well because I found out today I've been selected for interview for an internal position where I am currently working which offers the sort of salary I've been chasing for the past year or so. I realise I may not get it, but I'm really chuffed to get an interview as there was loads of interest in the job.

I know I have been working this past year and I'm grateful for that, but all I can say is keep on plugging away. I'm pushing 50 so there's hope for everyone.

Been a pretty crappy week for me too. I'm at the point in work where I've ran out of things to pretend that I'm doing. It's terrible. Still nobody has said anything about there being nothing to do. Driving me insane.

Applied for a good few jobs and have been rejected from two of them today. One refused to give me feedback and the other has been really helpful, but probably only because I used to work for them years ago.

Got my hopes pinned on one of the remainder, and there are another couple that would be nice to get but I'm not too bothered.

At this rate I'm thinking I'm stuck here until they sack me/make me redundant. I'm dreaming of the day when I can write my resignation letter.

People on here keep saying that you should never hand in your resignation until you have an unconditional offer. How is that possible? If your reference is your current employer, then you don't want your new employer to ask your current employer for a reference before you' ve handed your notice in! Awkward...
