At last I can be useful and answer something!
Stars show how many posts you've made (sorry can't remember the exact numbers)
    Red dot = offline
    Green dot = on line

I'm making do with a mini-fast at the moment whilst we are between visitors. Even though I'm not doing it "properly" I'm still enjoying reading everyone's posts and just thinking about whether I really need stuff or not. Thank heavens for our hens who are laying again: they are keeping me supplied with spanish omlettes and egg mayonaise for lunches. And I've just remembered we have a largish joint of pork in the freezer: so that's Easter Sunday lunch sorted.

Keep up all the good work and inspiring posts everyone

    Hi everyone

Started FF today as I have been spending this week on all sorts of things and need to get myself back in line. I have enough food in to last a bit but maybe will need some milk before the weekend. Not doing much over Easter because I have to work and Easter eggs for DGkids are already bought but going away for a week soon so need to curb my spending big time until then.

    Breadfast - weetabix and banana
Lunch - HM cheese sandwich and crisps
Dinner - beefless burger in bun and salad

1st day in ages feel prepared enough to come back as has recently been DD's 9th birthday, however DS informed me yesterday that we are out of rabbit food, so will need to get some, but am not going to include that as I visited same shop yesterday and if he'd told me I'd have picked some up then. Meanwhile the bunny will have to do the same as us and compromise, so she's got a carrot for now. :D

DD currently at a free hol club run by the church group she attends. DS still asleep in bed. Been lovely been able to get all my jobs done without kids about - bless adolescent hormones. :D

Yesterday, not having a great deal of breakfast stuff and wanting to stretch out what I had. I served a hot buffet breakfast, I had the only rasher of bacon, kids had the last 4 sausages between them, then I toasted the ends of loafs, made scrambled egg and did 1 tin of baked beans, 1/2 tin tomatoes and a few mushrooms for me. Kids loved it and there was stuff left over.
  • I think I could easily do this if I had brimming store cupboards to start with! Can you spend money on transport? What about the gym? Are we talking as far as going 'don't turn on the tv/laptop because it's technically spending money on electricity?' I couldn't do that!

I wonder if anyone COULD go that far though. I think the only things you would HAVE to spend money on would be the electricity to keep the fridge and freezer on, water, the oven/cooker and maybe a few loads of washing (unless you fancied handwashing a load in the bath!). With the days becoming longer, you could even go without electric lights for a week! Just means getting up at dawn and going to bed at dusk, unless you used candles! I think it sounds quite a fun challenge but not one I'm willing to try! haha

I got very strict on spending when my DH went in to a nursing home, and pretty much all his pension had to go towards paying the fees, so it was a matter of cutting right back wherever I could.

Hi Winchelsea - my reasons for needing to cut back are the same as yours. My husband is now in a nursing home, my incomings are down quite a bit and I don't draw my state pension until November - so things are rather tight.

Whilst I am enjoying this challenge - I have to admit that it's not just for fun - I do have to save wherever I can now.

Anyway Day 5 - another NSD - made some cake yesterday just using what I had in.

Unfortunately my iron stopped working this morning and I also need to buy a small hand mixer. :( I know I could technically manage without a mixer and could make do with a wooden spoon but as I have arthritis I do take the easy way out and use gadgets to help me.

Still - at least I've saved money on the food bill to cover the cost of replacing them, so I'm no worse off.;)
  • Hi all,
think I am going to have to dip out of FFiing (or trying to!) - combination of Easter hols, visitors coming and DD's 18th, until about Thursday next week. I will still be watching the grocery spend though, and trying not to have too many coffees out.

Yesterday was a NSD as planned, but today had an unscheduled spend, Summer shoes for DD - however she does need them and I had planned to give her the money, but saw some she liked and...!

I will still be reading with interest though.

Calicocat, I have a relative who is a sort of extreme moneysaver, he uses very little electricity - has wind up torches scattered about - has become virtually veggie because is cheaper, has almost no modcons, including no freezer, washing machine or TV. He has given up his car and cycles everywhere. Some of this sort of thing appeals to me, but I can't bear to be cold, would draw the line at the minimal heating he goes in for!

Hope everyone is having a good day, will keep popping in to see how we're all doing!

    Howdie folks,
    Todays spend...nada!
Just had some well dodgie looking f.fingers from freezer and potatoes. Have told mum she can't come till sunday so can carry on doing this as well as I can!?! And I deffo think arthritis should have the helping hand of a mixer,we need to be good to ourselves as well as the purse.
Modern-millie...I couldn't survive without my freezer as cook everything myself in large batches for convenience and cost and the car I want, that way it doesn't take 2hrs to get home from my job to get back to the animal/animals,but if life and working didn't get in the way I would try it......actually being honest I wouldn't thinking about it as would be very isolated here from friends. Electricity...am doing the earth hour at moment and have also resisted putting heating on(snowing here)..the cat is in shock and is sniffing each storage heater, hasn't sussed the hot water bottle in bed yet, funny to watch her tho.
How/can I recycle hyasinth bulbs to use next year?
Loving all the posts, have 'thanked' people when phone is being nice but have to 'zoom' in too much and miss a lot of this page.
Well done all and keep going,I am loving doing this, gotta say various friends think I'm bonkers, but I rekon they are th ones missing out.

calicocat - what a good idea to carry on the Earth Hour - I did it on Saturday at the "official" time, and enjoyed the ambience - candle light, with a nice CD to listen to (run on solar charged batteries). But it would be a great idea to do it again on other days! Apart from the environmental reasons, it would help keep the bills down!

Hyacinths - I just leave mine in the earth, cut them down once they're dying back, then forget them. They just keep coming back every year!

Forgot to add - did not open my purse today !
Keeping two cats and myself on a small budget, and enjoying life while we're at it!
