  • Hi everyone.

Jam Crumblie - how funny, this is v. similar to a recipe from my old microwave cookbook, I make it regularly and have just eaten a piece! You can also fill it with chopped dates and/or apricots, soaked, or mixed with jam. I have made it with mincemeat Jackie, and it is v. nice.

Shopped yesterday and spent £16, mainly on fresh food, plus waiting for an AF order which was £25, that should do us for the week except for milk and bread.

Succumbed to chips from the chip shop last night as like greent we were late back from town, but only spent £4.50 so not too bad.

Have been for a walk today, otherwise not going out so will be NSD.

Meals are - hot cross bun and banana for breakfast, soft cheese, cucumber and coleslaw sw (plus jam crumblie!) for lunch, cashew nut and veg biryani for dinner.

DNM, well done on the wine, I only open a bottle a week now,OH mostly drinks cider but will have the odd glass, I could easily drink more but restrain myself!

Bit of time in the garden this afternoon, then ironing - everything line-drying - then might just have to make some Jam Crumblie - have HM jam, wonder if it would work with marmalade?

Hello thought I would de lurk, it’s 2 weeks since we have been shopping so a lot of NSD, however we had to attend a wedding up north at the weekend which meant petrol spend.:)

We are trying to make it to 3 weeks no spend on food thanks to the nicely loaded with RTCs freezer, but we are starting to struggle now having run out of fresh veg and fruit, now using frozen but it’s not quite the same, we are saving as we are away for a long weekend over Easter and we are aiming to do a Costco shop next week, and that saves us enough to do it. Just not sure we can get there as I think I may cave to to a market shop.

Oh noooooo! I was convincing myself I couldn't give this a go as I didn't have enough spare jam in the house. But I do have plenty of dried apricots (and possibly some dates too) so I might just have to give it a go this evening :p

Catznine - thank you for starting this thread. I've been following for a while but haven't started my own fiscal challenge yet. I bought both of Jeff Yeager's books though. I know - a real cheapskate would get them from the library but I find these books really inspiring and dip into them all the time. I'm already reading one of them for the second time. Thanks again for introducing me to a new frugal inspiration :T I hope you join you fiscal-fasters soon!

M/M its true they are rather yummy with christmas mincemeat.I cooked them this afternoon and had to hide them away or I would have scoffed the lot I will take some round to DDs tomorrow and get the boys seal of approval on them hopefully. Those boys have hollow legs and will eat anything thats put in front of them I have some dried apricots in the cupboard I may make some 'grown -up' ones with a dash of cinnamon and a splosh of scotch maybe ( I have a bottle in my cupboard that's barely been touched as I don't like scotch much, but don't mind it in a cake or pudding)
All the washing dried beautifully and I have chicken curry for dinner tonight and I also got some cooked sliced apple from the freezer so I am going to knock up a crumble with some custard for pudding
Still stayed away from the shops and I'm very pleased with the resulting left over cash in my 'food purse'

  • Hi purplekitten, over 2 weeks with no shopping is impressive - well done!

Black cat, I tried our L.A. libraries website for the Jeff Yeager books and they are not stocked, so buying them may have been the only way to go anyway. I will probably order one of them when I really feel like spending!

I've been away, staying with friends for the past week, so have spent a bit. But, apart from paying my fair share of teas and coffees out etc, I really have bought very little. No souvenirs, apart from some reduced birthday cards that I saw, but they're always useful when you haven't got time to make one.

So, back on the challenge now I'm home. Cooked a meal - fish fingers from the freezer, carrots and a tomato from the fridge, half a tin of green beans from the cupboard, and potatoes from the sack. Had a pear for dessert from the fruit bowl, in surprisingly good condition. All in all not a bad meal!

Have opened a packet of long life milk for my tea and coffee. Will see how long I can go without going to the shops!

Must add this - Kiwisaver - I had porridge with maple syrup for breakfast yesterday at my friends' - Mr Friend is Canadian, and got me to try it (and was amazed that I never had!) - it was lovely!
Keeping two cats and myself on a small budget, and enjoying life while we're at it!

you know you can actually ask your library to buy a book if they don't stock it in the county. I think a call to ask them will prove fruitful. The online search engine of my library showed that they didn't have the Kath Kelly book, so I called to ask if they would buy it and they actually borrowed one from somewhere

I really need to get back on the FF wagon! DH has been off for 4 days this week and we seem to have spent a fortune. i knew there was a reason i dont let him come shopping any more:eek:. I would say we have spent most of our food budget for april and it hasn't even begun yet ( we started the budget on 23rd march though as that's payday). tomorrows Daily mirror has aldi vouchers in as well, and i've promised to take my mum shopping on sunday. I will need fresh fruit and veg and some bits to see me through the easter hols while the kids are off, and if i get another bag of dog food i'm hoping i can FF for the rest of the month.. it will need some planning though, for 3 weeks of nsd's!!
todays tea was a bbq, dh went to the co op while i was at work and bought sausages, rolls, cheese and salad, all of which we already had in:mad:
tomorrow, dd1 is having a sausage butty in her butty box and some hm potato salad and fruit salad, dh is taking dd2 to his mums for dinner and i eat in work. tea for me is leftover diet coke veg and egg fried rice from last night, no doubt dh and the squids will want another bbq if the sun's still shining;)
