  • Week one Fiscal Fast complete! Two more weeks of Fiscal Fasting to go. I almost slipped up today because I have been depressed and felt like shopping but, I stopped myself. I figured I would feel worse knowing I broke my 3 week Fiscal Fast.
I've been depressed because of my Cerebral Palsy has made walking and keeping my balance difficult. I've even considered using my walker from when I sprained my foot. (I am TERRIBLE on crutches!! I'd be more likely to hurt myself more using crutches!)
Well I have two more weeks of my Fiscal Fast to go! I hope I can do it. I am out of eggs and have been wanting scrambled eggs. Oh well, I'll live.
If I find there is something that I really CAN'T be without, I will get it using cash only. So far it hasn't come to that. I'd like to see how long I can go. I'll try for two more weeks!!

Oh Erica, I am thinking of you. Do you know of any others in a similar situation to yourself where perhaps you could split some foods up, such as each have a half a pack of butter and share eggs?

Still on my fiscal fast, no choice really as I have no grocery money left until the 28th. We will manage, but will have some unusual combinations by the end, not sure how hubby will feel about this.

One question, I have some frozen white cod fish, one Birds Eye pack in a sauce with a best before Jun 2014, and some plain cod fillets with a best before sep 2014. Would you still use them? I am thinking I will, but wished to ask others opinions.

    Take care all.

Thanks craigy. I will plan on using some up this week in a fish pie.

I too have just got some chicken out of the freezer to defrost ready for tomorrow's dinner. Also, defrosting extra so can cook it all up tomorrow and then make a risotto with the left overs.

It feels good to be getting back to basics frugal wise.

:) I'd definately use them, Peony. I've frozen salmon bought on special and eaten it 11 months later with no ill-effects whatsoever.

  • Hello everyone, I made it for a week but had an important low spend as well as some free food too!! I needed some hamburger as I had no meat in my fridge, freezer or cuboards. I went down to the local gas station/little market and got two pounds of hamburger using points on my rewards card so it costs me NOTHING!!
I had to get some freezer bags and went to our local grocery store. There were some local fire fighters there trying to raise some money and as I came out they gave me some fresh mini cinnamon rolls that they didn't want as well as some blue berry muffins so it was a low spend & freebie day!!

well done erica on your low spend freebie day .I had a big bag of mushrooms given to me yesterday so will be making mushroom soup this morning.I have already trimmed the stalks and bagged them up and they are in the freezer to go into a beef cassero;e later this month. In rooting around the freezer I found some cubed beef that I had forgotten about I have plenty of carrots and oninons in there as well so a big pot of beef and musroom stew looks likely foat some point this week. I shall cook it all up and portion and freeze some for later when the weather gets chilly. We are all doing our bit to not waste things which is good I was reading an article about how much food is wasted and its horrifying.Apart from the fact of waste, it the thought of filling up landfill with unwanted food thats so awful. I am very careful not to waste anything if at all possible.Even orange peel gets grated and dried for use in cakes,or just dried and I like to put some on the radiator in the winter so the house smells nice.Anyone else have small things that they do to reuse or recycle odds and ends with ? :):)

Erica, what a good day you had :j

Now on Day 3 of my fiscal fast. I will have to go out at some point and buy some sugar and toothpaste but I will use some loose change that I have indoors. I will ask hubby to drop me off in town tomorrow so that I can visit the pound store.

Jackie, any tips I can glean I will put to good use. I grew up with a mother who used everything up as she grew up in the second world war. So I know what to do, but over the years I became complacent and lazy. Back to basics for me, but it feels sometimes as if I am in a fog and I cannot remember what to do. Not sure if any of this makes sense!

    Good Luck all.
